La causa principal que me movi� a escribir este di�logo fue deseo de manifestar la justicia del Emperador y la iniquidad de aqu�llos que lo desafiaron, y en estilo que de todo g�nero de hombres fuese con sabor le�do, para lo cual me ocurri� esta invenci�n, de introducir a Car�n, barquero del infierno que, estando muy triste porque hab�a o�do decir ser ya hecha la paz entre el Emperador y el rey de Francia, de que a �l ven�a mucha p�rdida, viene Mercurio a pedirle albricias por los desaf�os que el rey de Francia y el rey de Inglaterra hicieron al Emperador. Por ser la materia en s� desabrida, mientras le cuenta Mercurio las diferencias de estos pr�ncipes, vienen a pasar ciertas �nimas que con algunas gracias y buena doctrina interrumpen la historia. Esta invenci�n me pareci� al principio tanto buena cuanto a la fin me comenz� a desagradar, de manera que lo quise todo romper. Mas si�ndome despu�s loado por algunas personas cuya prudencia est� lejos de enga�arse en semejantes cosas, y de cuya gravedad y bondad no se puede presumir ni tener sospecha de adulaci�n, quise dar m�s cr�dito a su parecer que al m�o. Y mostrelo a uno de los m�s se�alados te�logos, as� en letras como en bondad de vida que en Espa�a yo conozco, por cuyo consejo enmend� algunas cosas de donde los calumniadores pudieran tener achaque para calumniarme. Aconsej�bame allende de esto que as� como pongo �nimas de muchos estados que se van al infierno y sola la �nima de un casado que va al para�so, pusiese de cada estado de aqu�llos un �nima que se salvase, diciendo que de otra manera los otros estados se podr�an quejar, si�ndoles aqu� los casados preferidos, y que con esto no solamente quedaba excluida la calumnia, mas la obra muy perfecta. Y aunque en esto no me pareci� tener menos raz�n que en las otras cosas de que me hab�a avisado, excuseme diciendo que mi intenci�n hab�a sido honrar aquellos estados que ten�an m�s necesidad de ser favorecidos, como es el estado del matrimonio, que al parecer de algunos est� fuera de la perfecci�n cristiana, y el de los frailes que en este nuestro siglo est� tan calumniado. Y a esta causa, poniendo un casado que sub�a al cielo hice menci�n de un fraile de San Francisco que hab�a llevado aquel camino. De manera que (a mi parecer) ninguna raz�n tendr�n los otros estados de quejarse
