"Here is a well-known story. Before sometime in the early modern period, Europeans believed that knowledge of nature came solely from reading books, above all those of Aristotle. Then the humanist re-discovery and translation of various ancient philosophical works led the number of "authorities" to grow, and alongside a monolithic "Aristotelianism" emerged any number of "-isms": Stoicism, Epicureanism, Platonism, Skepticism, and so on. Gradually, philosophers realized that they need not need rely on authorities at all, and began to use their own reason, coupled with experience and experiment. Scholasticism and humanism were dead, and the "Age of Reason" had begun, with Descartes as its iconoclastic father (perhaps with a little help from Bacon)"--

Finocchiaro's new and revised translations have done what the Inquisition could not: they have captured an exceptional range of Galileo's career while also letting him speak--in clear English. No other volume offers more convenient or more reliable access to Galileo's own words, whether on the telescope, the Dialogue, the trial, or the mature theory of motion. --Michael H. Shank, Professor of the History of Science, University of Wisconsin–Madison

The world's first mountain-top observatory and America's first big-science research center, Lick Observatory exemplifies astronomy's dramatic development in the past century. A dedicated Confederate naval officer and his jack-of-all-trades foreman used the bequest of a miserly California eccentric to transform an isolated mountain peak into the world's premier research observatory. Its first staff included a director from West Point and three of the outstanding astronomers of their time. Since its dedication in 1888, Lick Observatory has been the site of many of the most important discoveries in astronomy. Eye on the Sky presents Lick Observatory from the point of view of the people who breathed life into its giant telescopes. Their community was both constant and constantly transformed, shaped by workers famous and unknown who made it their home. The authors also explain in terms anyone can understand the laboratory advances that were adapted to telescopes to make them more powerful, and the conceptual breakthroughs that discoveries at the telescope helped bring about. The men and women who went to the top of Mount Hamilton in search of greater knowledge of the skies helped to change our conception of the universe and our place in it . They were people with personal and political lives as well as scientific careers, and their story illuminates a time and a place where foundations were laid for the discoveries of the next century.

The Sun In The Church written by J. L. Heilbron and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-01 with Religion categories.

Between 1650 and 1750, four Catholic churches were the best solar observatories in the world. Built to fix an unquestionable date for Easter, they also housed instruments that threw light on the disputed geometry of the solar system, and so, within sight of the altar, subverted Church doctrine about the order of the universe. A tale of politically canny astronomers and cardinals with a taste for mathematics, "The Sun in the Church" tells how these observatories came to be, how they worked, and what they accomplished. It describes Galileo's political overreaching, his subsequent trial for heresy, and his slow and steady rehabilitation in the eyes of the Catholic Church. And it offers an enlightening perspective on astronomy, Church history, and religious architecture, as well as an analysis of measurements testing the limits of attainable accuracy, undertaken with rudimentary means and extraordinary zeal. Above all, the book illuminates the niches protected and financed by the Catholic Church in which science and mathematics thrived. Superbly written, "The Sun in the Church" provides a magnificent corrective to long-standing oversimplified accounts of the hostility between science and religion.

Linear Algebra In Context written by Lawrence Susanka and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-07 with Mathematics categories.

This text combines a compact linear algebra course with a serious dip into various physical applications. It may be used as a primary text for a course in linear algebra or as a supplementary text for courses in applied math, scientific computation, mathematical physics, or engineering. The text is divided into two parts. Part 1 comprises a fairly standard presentation of linear algebra. Chapters 1–3 contain the core mathematical concepts typical for an introductory course while Chapter 4 contains numerous "short" applications. Chapter 5 is a repository of standard facts about matrix factorization and quadratic forms together with the "connective tissue" of topics needed for a coherent discussion, including the singular value decomposition, the Jordan normal form, Sylvester's law of inertia and the Witt theorems. Part I contains around 300 exercises, found throughout the text, and are an integral part of the presentation. Part 2 features deeper applications. Each of these "large" applications require no more than linear algebra to discuss, though the style and arrangement of results would be challenging to a beginning student and more appropriate for a second or later course. Chapter 6 provides an introduction to the discrete Fourier transform, including the fast Fourier algorithm. Chapter 7 is a thorough introduction to isometries and some of the classical groups, and how these groups have come to be important in physics. Chapter 8 is a fairly detailed look at real algebras and completes a presentation of the classical Lie groups and algebras. Chapter 9 is a careful discussion of tensors on a finite-dimensional vector space, finishing with the Hodge Star operator and the Grassmann algebra. Finally, Chapter 10 gives an introduction to classical mechanics including Noether's first theorem and emphasizes how the classical Lie groups, discussed in earlier chapters, become important in this setting. The Chapters of Part 2 are intended to give a sense of the ubiquity, of the indispensable utility, of linear algebra in modern science and mathematics and some feel for way it is actually used in disparate subject areas. Twelve appendices are included. The last seven refer to MATLAB® code which, though not required and rarely mentioned in the text, can be used to augment understanding. For example, fifty-five MATLAB functions implement every tensor operation from Chapter 9. A zipped file of all code is available for download from the author's website.

A to Z of Physicists, Updated Edition focuses not only on the lives and personalities of those profiled, but also on their research and contributions to the field. A fascinating and important element of this work is the attention paid to the obstacles that minority physicists had to overcome to reach their personal and professional goals. Through incidents, quotations, and photographs, the entries portray something of the human face, which is often lost in books on science and scientists. A to Z of Physicists, Updated Edition features more than 150 entries and 51 black-and-white photographs. Culturally inclusive and spanning the whole range of physicists from ancient times to the present day, this is an ideal resource for students and general readers interested in the history of physics or the significant aspects of the personal and professional lives of important physicists. People covered include: Archimedes (ca. 285–212 BCE) Homi Jehangir Bhabha (1909–1966) Pavel Alekseyevich Cherenkov (1904–1990) Marie Curie (1867–1934) George Gamow (1904–1968) Tsung Dao Lee (1926–present) Lise Meitner (1878–1968) Yuval Ne'eman (1925–2006) Johannes Stark (1874–1957) Nikola Tesla (1856–1943) Alessandro Volta (1745–1827) Hideki Yukawa (1907–1981)
