Bishop John Shaw was importing priests from Europe when he discerned the need for a seminary for the Diocese of San Antonio, TX. A locally-formed clergy was key to the support of the Catholic faith in the young diocese. Relying on five diocesan priests as faculty, Shaw dedicated St. Johns Seminary in 1915. A frontier, make-do attitude energized the first faculty as they taught and guided the seminarys first class who lived and studied in what had been the bishops residence. In its first century, St. Johns Assumption Seminary has trained nearly 800 priests for service in arch/dioceses across the US and foreign lands. With the guidance of arch/diocesan priests in the first 25 years, the Congregation of the Missions (Vincentians) in the second 25 years, and again directed by archdiocesan priests and a diverse faculty in the last 50 years, St. Johns Assumption has both struggled and thrived. Collaborating with Oblate School of Theology, St. Johns Assumption nationally-known for its pioneering bilingual-bicultural programs, stands on solid ground as it begins its second century. Shepherds in the Image of Christ chronicles 100 years of molding men and boys into priests for the Roman Catholic Church of Texas and beyond.

Dutch Chicago written by Robert P. Swierenga and has been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-11-07 with History categories.

Now at least 250,000 strong, the Dutch in greater Chicago have lived for 150 years "below the radar screens" of historians and the general public. Here their story is told for the first time. In Dutch Chicago Robert Swierenga offers a colorful, comprehensive history of the Dutch Americans who have made their home in the Windy City since the mid-1800s. The original Chicago Dutch were a polyglot lot from all social strata, regions, and religions of the Netherlands. Three-quarters were Calvinists; the rest included Catholics, Lutherans, Unitarians, Socialists, Jews, and the nominally churched. Whereas these latter Dutch groups assimilated into the American culture around them, the Dutch Reformed settled into a few distinct enclaves -- the Old West Side, Englewood, and Roseland and South Holland -- where they stuck together, building an institutional infrastructure of churches, schools, societies, and shops that enabled them to live from cradle to grave within their own communities. Focusing largely but not exclusively on the Reformed group of Dutch folks in Chicago, Swierenga recounts how their strong entrepreneurial spirit and isolationist streak played out over time. Mostly of rural origins in the northern Netherlands, these Hollanders in Chicago liked to work with horses and go into business for themselves. Picking up ashes and garbage, jobs that Americans despised, spelled opportunity for the Dutch, and they came to monopolize the garbage industry. Their independence in business reflected the privacy they craved in their religious and educational life. Church services held in the Dutch language kept outsiders at bay, as did a comprehensive system of private elementary and secondary schools intended to inculcate youngsters with the Dutch Reformed theological and cultural heritage. Not until the world wars did the forces of Americanization finally break down the walls, and the Dutch passed into the mainstream. Only in their churches today, now entirely English speaking, does the Dutch cultural memory still linger. Dutch Chicago is the first serious work on its subject, and it promises to be the definitive history. Swierenga's lively narrative, replete with historical detail and anecdotes, is accompanied by more than 250 photographs and illustrations. Valuable appendixes list Dutch-owned garbage and cartage companies in greater Chicago since 1880 as well as Reformed churches and schools. This book will be enjoyed by readers with Dutch roots as well as by anyone interested in America's rich ethnic diversity.

Although Bertha Pitts Campbell devoted her life to many causes that improved the lives of people and strengthened her community, none meant more to her than Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, which she and twenty-one other women founded in 1913 while attending Howard University. Through memories of Founder Campbell's sorors and family, four sister-friends share the achievements of an extraordinary woman who always lived life to the fullest and exceeded her goals. As a visionary member of the sorority, Founder Campbell marched in the 1913 Suffrage Parade for women's voting rights, orchestrated the sorority's international public service efforts, and helped transform the history of women and people of color. Her journey through life makes clear the fact that she was a brilliant thinker, passionate change agent, and empathetic leader who continuously strived for excellence. This biography tells the compelling history of the ideal Delta Girl who continues to inspire her sorors to live, live, live!

Originally formed to harbor freed slaves and Americans returning to Africa, Liberia once was a land of hope. That was shattered by a long Civil War that shook its very foundation. Today's Liberia is glimpsed in this second edition. Building on the first edition, this updated volume focuses on the personalities, from the founders of Liberia, to the soldiers who are responsible simultaneously for destruction and the hope of stability. Along with these people, various social and ethnic groups, political parties and labor movements, economic entities and natural resources are profiled in this updated work. A new chronology of Liberia is included, and a selected bibliography suggests further readings for the scholar.
