This book of 85 drawings by Jim Dine illustrates the range and mastery of the artist's draftsmanship over more than four decades. The variety and breadth of the selection shows the intense way Dine observes the world around him and the excitement with which he records it on paper. Dine has said that his ability to draw is both a privilege and the result of hard physical training, compelling him to move inexorably forward to capture the next idea or the next psychological insight in drawings that are extraordinarily human. The selection includes early tool pencil drawings and collages, as well as powerful portrait and figure studies in a variety of media. Also included are large painterly pastels executed with a bravura that places them somewhere between painting and drawing. Dine sees his paintings and drawings as essentially conceived and developed in the same way--requiring the same amount of time, emotion and physicality of medium. The only difference, in the end, is that the drawings are on paper.

"For in utter darkness, it is impossible to know in what degree of safety we stand; we are ignorant of the objects that surround us..." Edmund Burke Figure Studies is exactly that, studies in the human form. The practice of figure studies has a long history in the visual arts, particularly drawing, but for Michener it is about blurred, close-up, black-and-white photos with a sensual, dark, sometimes menacing edge. Intertwined human forms, body parts bordering on abstraction, and frozen movement are the stuff of Michener's raw vision. Born in Boston in 1940, Diana Michener holds a Bachelor of Arts from Barnard College in New York and later studied with Lisette Model at New York's New School. Michener has exhibited internationally, including a retrospective at the Maison Europ�ene de la Photographie in Paris in 2001. Her books with Steidl include the award-winning Dogs, Fires, Me (2005), 3 Poems (2006) and Sweethearts (2010).

American Pop pioneer Jim Dine was asked by Los Angeles' Getty Museum in 2007 to produce the first contemporary project for the Getty Villa in Malibu by responding in some way to its renowned antiquities collection. Dine was drawn to the collection's ancient Greek sculptures and was given a room in the Villa for which he created three new monumental wood sculptures that he painted brightly in the Hellenistic tradition. Dine also wrote a long poem, which he installed alongside the sculptures, on the gallery wall. Jim Dine: Poet Singing (The Flowering Sheets) documents the entire process with photographs by Dine, Diana Michener and Gerhard Steidl. Jim Dine was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1935. He came to prominence in New York in the 1960s with Happenings that he orchestrated along with Claes Oldenburg and Allan Kaprow.

This work in another form was shown at The New York Film Festival in 1982. It still remains, for me, a study in indecision. The Sweethearts are emblematic of that thing that can exist between couples, when one can not assume the persona of the other. Adopting the form of a flip book, Sweethearts presents a sequence of film stills which segue through a series of theatrical moments set on a domestic stage. The actors appear in banal moments of daily life and animated moments of conflict to offer an intimate exploration of the vagaries of love and life. Diana Michener was born in Boston in April 1940. She studied at the New School in New York City with Lisette Model and at a workshop in Yosemite with Ansel Adams. In 2001 the Maison Europèenne de la Photographie exhibited a large survey exhibition of her work entitled Silence Me. A catalogue of the same name accompanied the exhibition. Michener lives and works in Paris and New York, and is represented by Pace MacGill, New York. In 2005 Steidl published her award winning book Dogs, Fires, Me.

A childhood encounter with a crow at a zoo led to a lifetime fascination with avian life for the American artist Jim Dine. This encounter with the bird was perceived by the young Dine with a mixture of fear, fascination and a deeper understanding of his unconscious world, and from it grew a mythic personal symbolism, which he explores in "Birds," a series of remarkable black-and-white photographs. Here, an everyday, unspectacular bird might appear to the beholder as a character of mythology, as a jester at a Medieval court, or as a strange messenger from a world behind the scenes. These are rich, intimate, darkly detailed images imbued with symbolism and meaning. They are also beautiful and compelling, particularly as published in this spectacular volume, which, with 36 images printed using a technique called heliogravure, and with a Japanese binding, is a truly beautiful object in itself, and reveals a new aspect of Dine's work.
