Joana Casals és l’autora d’aquest diari, que abraça, amb algunes interrupcions, de 1932 fins al gener de 1939. Casals havia entrat a treballar a l’Escola de Bibliotecàries, en qualitat de secretària, el 1925. En aquells moments la institució era la versió adulterada de l’escola creada per la Mancomunitat el 1915. Amb la caiguda de Primo de Rivera i el subsegüent nomenament de Jordi Rubió com a director, el centre va recuperar la seva identitat primigènia i va viure el període més notable. Casals escriu el diari a instàncies de Jordi Rubió; tanmateix, el text no té en cap moment un to formal, sinó que és molt personal i, fins a un cert punt, íntim. Hi enregistra les seves opinions sobre l’entorn —els professors, les alumnes, els esdeveniments polítics de més relleu...—, presta molta atenció a les alumnes i les seves activitats, ben integrades en el dia a dia de l’Escola, i presenta un testimoni viu i directe de la vida a la rereguarda durant la Guerra Civil.

SCIENCE AND EMPIRES: FROM THE INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM TO THE BOOK Patrick PETITJEAN, Catherine JAMI and Anne Marie MOULIN The International Colloquium "Science and Empires - Historical Studies about Scientific De velopment and European Expansion" is the product of an International Colloquium, "Sciences and Empires - A Comparative History of Scien tific Exchanges: European Expansion and Scientific Development in Asian, African, American and Oceanian Countries". Organized by the REHSEIS group (Research on Epistemology and History of Exact Sciences and Scientific Institutions) of CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), the colloquium was held from 3 to 6 April 1990 in the UNESCO building in Paris. This colloquium was an idea of Professor Roshdi Rashed who initiated this field of studies in France some years ago, and proposed "Sciences and Empires" as one of the main research programmes for the The project to organize such a colloquium was a bit REHSEIS group. of a gamble. Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.

This open access edited volume offers an analysis of the entangled histories of education and development in twentieth-century Africa. It deals with the plurality of actors that competed and collaborated to formulate educational and developmental paradigms and projects: debating their utility and purpose, pondering their necessity and risk, and evaluating their intended and unintended consequences in colonial and postcolonial moments. Since the late nineteenth century, the “educability” of the native was the subject of several debates and experiments: numerous voices, arguments, and agendas emerged, involving multiple institutions and experts, governmental and non-governmental, religious and laic, operating from the corridors of international organizations to the towns and rural villages of Africa.
