Examining two state-sponsored history writing projects in Indonesia and the Philippines in the 1970s, this book illuminates the contents and contexts of the two projects and, more importantly, provides a nuanced characterization of the relationship between embodiments of power (state, dictators, government officials) and knowledge (intellectuals, historians, history). Known respectively as Sejarah Nasional Indonesia (SNI) and the Tadhana project, these projects were initiated by the Suharto and Marcos authoritarian regimes against the backdrop of rising and competing nationalisms, as well as the regimes’ efforts at political consolidation. The dialectics between actors and the politico-academic contexts determine whether scholarship and politics would clash, mutually support, or co-exist parallel with one another. Rather than one side manipulating or co-opting the other, this study shows the mutual need or partnership between scholars and political actors in these projects. This book proposes the need to embrace rather than deny or transcend the entwined power/knowledge if the idea is for scholarship to realize its truly progressive visions. Analyzing the dynamics of state–scholar relations in the two countries, the book will be of interest to academics in the fields on Southeast Asian history and politics, nationalism, historiography, intellectual history, postocolonial studies, cultural studies, and the sociology of knowledge.

Les galerades que es presenten aquí, són les primeres proves inèdites fetes expressament per passar per la Censura del règim franquista, així com, per fer-hi correccions i esmenes ortotipogràfiques, d'estil i ortogràfiques. El dietari comença el gener del 1942: l’escriptor i el seu fill estan instal·lats a pagès i allí passaran (a partir de l’abril del 1942 amb la família al complet) els difícils anys de guerra fins l’alliberament de França, quan tornen a París. Es tracta doncs d’un recull d’impressions vives, acolorides, i els primers anys sense gaires esperances. Una manera de deixar constància de la intensitat del moment històric viscut, com l’anada a la recerca de queviures, el patiment de viure sota els bombardeigs, les relacions amb els companys d’exili, amb els camperols, amb els soldats alemanys. El perill de la retirada i la joia de l’alliberament. A l’edició d’aquesta última obra memorialística s’afegeix el dietari escrit al 1958 arran de la segona anada a la presó Model pel compliment de la sentència. Rememora els quinze dies passats a la quarta galeria als efectes de la quarantena o dels deu dies de període d’observació, viscuts en una cel·la amb dos altres presos. Va ser editat per l'Editorial Pòrtic, al 1972, en temps del franquisme i quan la Censura tenia un paper molt important en les publicacions de llibres. Anys més tard l'editorial Columna, l'any 1994, el reproduí en el Volum IV, de l'Obra Completa. Aquestes edicions són doncs incompletes. Per una banda, a causa de la Censura i per l'altra, perquè l'editor de Pòrtic el va considerar massa extens. Tal dia, les galerades dipositades amb tota la resta del llegat literari a l'Arxiu Històric de Terrassa, anaren a parar a mans de Montserrat Canyameres, que després de fer-ne una lectura exhaustiva, s'adonà que aquestes contenien la versió íntegra de l'Obra i no pas la censurada i retallada. Amb l'edició del llibre incompleta per una banda i les galerades per l'altra, n'anà fent la lectura d'ambdues, comparant i marcant en les galerades tot allò, que és molt!, inèdit en l'Obra editada primer per Pòrtic i després per Columna. Des d'aleshores, malgrat que s'hagi intentat editar de nou el "Diari íntim", no s'ha trobat cap editorial que s'interessés a publicar-lo íntegrament. The Ethiopian-Eritrean federation, a product of a United Nations resolution, came into existence in 1952 and was abolished ten years later. The primary objective of this book is to examine the rise and the fall of the federation in the nght of present-day realities. This central theme is placed in context by a reconstruction of Eritrean political organizations during the crucial postwar years. The work includes a short account of the war between Eritrean nationalist forces and the Ethiopian government, which led up to the emergence of Eritrea as a sovereign state. Based primarily on archival sources at the Public Record Office in London, Eritrea and Ethiopia argues that no other group in the region has repeatedly succeeded in shaping its political destiny as the Tigreans of Eritrea have. Negash maintains that the federation was abolished by Eritrean social and political forces rather than by Ethiopia. The UN-imposed federation, together with its accompanying constitution, were doomed to fail, as these were foreign to Eritrean and Ethiopian conceptions of political power. The attempts of the Eritrean Moslem League to defend and maintain the federation were frustrated by internal contradictions, by the Unionist party, and by misconstrued perceptions of the division of powers between Eritrea and Ethiopia. The author looks closely at the impact of the British period on Eritrean society. Such an examination provides a better understanding of the background to the conflict and it is an important part of Eritrean political and social history. This book is the story of the slow but steady dissolution of the federation as seen and observed by the British diplomatic corps. Between 1952 and 1962, there were about thirty British nationals assigned to the Eritrean government. These expatriates kept in touch with the British consulate-general whose responsibility was to protect the interests of British nationals as well as to report developments to London. The conclusions and interpretations found in this book are, to a great extent, based on that documentation. Eritrea and Ethiopia is the first study of its kind to follow the rise and fall of the federation. It will be a challenging and insightful read for students of African affairs, diplomatic historians, policy studies scholars, and political theorists.

This book closes the gap for beginners who want to study the Amharic language and had difficulties in finding the right grammar for this purpose: The first grammar of Amharic, the national language of Ethiopia, was published by Hiob Ludolf in 1698. The Amharic grammar published by Praetorius in 1879 is based on Amharic religious texts and on scattered material, usually composed by missionaries. A milestone in the study of Amharic is Marcel Cohen's Traite de langue amharique (1936), but this grammar, too is not completely suited for beginners since the author's generalizations are at times aimed at linguists. The grammar that comes closest to the concept of a beginner's grammar is that of C.H. Dawkin (1960), yet this grammar is extremely short, does not give examples and does not introduce the student to the intricacies of the language.The new book gives all the grammatical forms and the sentences of the present grammar in Amharic script and in phonetic transcription. The illustrative examples have a free and a literal translation. This procedure should likewise prove to be useful for the Semitist as well as for the general linguist.
