The 70th volume of the Eranos Yearbooks presents the work of the last three years of activities at the Eranos Foundation (2009–2011). Under the influence of the psychologist Carl Gustav Jung and other prominent leaders of that era, the Eranos Conferences found their way towards symbolical, archetypal, and mythological motifs. The Eranos gathering is symbolized by its famous Round Table, the image and meaning of which inspired many of the leading thinkers of the 20th century. Giovanna valls Galfetti (1963) cresce tra Parigi e Barcellona in una famiglia borghese, di alto profilo culturale, di artisti e intellettuali. Suo padre Xavier è un pittore affermato, il fratello Manuel si prepara a diventare un promettente politico: oggi è il Primo ministro francese. Adolescente negli anni '80, Giovanna entra nell'età adulta con un ricco bagaglio di curiosità e apertura mentale, ma con la fragilità che spesso contraddistingue quell'età di passaggio. Sperimenta la droga, ne rimane invischiata, cade nel baratro. La sua discesa agli inferi è brutale e non le risparmia nulla: diventa dipendente dall'eroina e dalla cocaina, vive ai margini della società; si ammala di epatite, poi di Aids. Neppure i famigliari, affranti e impreparati, sanno più come aiutarla. Solo la sua incredibile forza di carattere le consente, a un certo punto, di intraprendere una cura per liberarsi dalla ossicodipendenza. Questo libro ne segue passo passo il lungo percorso di riabilitazione, alternando il racconto elaborato oggi a mente lucida, la corrispondenza con i suoi cari, impregnata di una forte e struggente emotività, e le pagine del diario intimo, un flusso di pensieri spontaneo, a tratti visionario. Giovanna entra nel centro CITA di Dosrius, Barcellona, nel 2004. Dopo alcuni mesi di soggiorno in clinica, dietro suggerimento del suo medico segue una terapia integrativa nella comunità di Prato Raso, in Brasile. Qui, nel cuore della foresta amazzonica, sotto stretto controllo medico sperimenta l'uso della ayahuasca, una bevanda allucinogena estratta dalla macerazione di una liana e usata dalle popolazioni indigene, il cui uso a scopi terapeutici si è rivelato efficace per il trattamento delle dipendenze da sostanze stupefacenti. L'assunzione di ayahuasca, nel corso di rituali di tipo sciamanico, induce il paziente a vivere sensazioni e visioni che in seguito vengono rielaborate con l'aiuto del terapeuta. Dopo due soggiorni a Prato Raso, Giovanna torna a Barcellona e si ristabilisce; oggi si ritiene guarita dalla tossicodipendenza. La terapia con sostanze psicoattive provata da Giovanna Valls con esiti risolutivi rappresenta ancora oggi una scelta sperimentale e molto audace. Diario di una rinascita è una testimonianza unica e di straordinario interesse per chiunque abbia vissuto direttamente o indirettamente il dramma della tossicodipendenza; ma è soprattutto una grande e nobile prova di amore per la vita.

This book takes up the stimuli of new international historiography, albeit focusing mainly on the two regimes that undoubtedly provided the model for Fascist movements in Europe, namely the Italian and the German. Starting with a historiographical assessment of the international situation, vis-à-vis studies on Fascism and National Socialism, and then concentrate on certain aspects that are essential to any study of the two dictatorships, namely the complex relationships with their respective societies, the figures of the two dictators and the role of violence. This volume reaches beyond the time-frame encompassing Fascism and National Socialism experiences, directing the attention also toward the period subsequent to their demise. This is done in two ways. On the one hand, examining the uncomfortable architectural legacy left by dictatorships to the democratic societies that came after the war. On the other hand, the book addresses an issue that is very much alive both in the strictly historiographical and political science debate, that is to say, to what extent can the label of Fascism be used to identify political phenomena of these current times, such as movements and parties of the so-called populist and souverainist right.
