Scrivendo un diario, il protagonista sembra voler ammettere i propri dubbi, le incertezze d'una fede che barcolla tra la sottomissione alla volontà di Dio e il desiderio di rinuncia ai doveri della vocazione e del ministero. Viene trasmessa l'immagine d'un prete inetto, col suo abito sempre malmesso e la fama di alcolista che gli si attribuisce nel villaggio. Il diario diventa necessario per la confessione dei propri peccati ma è anche una forma di cedimento all'autoassoluzione. Solo alla fine, quando si fa cocreta la propria sofferenza fisica, che non si riesce a distinguere da quella interiore, la vicenda umana dell'insignificante curato di campagna tocca il suo punto più alto e acquista un senso.
