Die diatopische Variation in den deutschen Rechtssprachen ist bisher wenig systematisch behandelt worden. Der vorliegende Band leistet einen Beitrag zur Schließung dieser Lücke, indem das Thema aus linguistisch-terminologischer Sicht thematisiert wird. Dabei finden die Rechtssprachen Deutschlands, Österreichs, der Schweiz, Südtirols, Ostbelgiens sowie die deutsche Rechtssprache der Europäischen Union Berücksichtigung; hinzu kommen regionale Varianten, die in geringerem Umfang ebenfalls in juristischen Dokumenten kodifiziert sind. Die Publikation hat das Ziel, die Aufmerksamkeit auf die generell wenig beachtete, in der Übersetzungs- und Wissenschaftspraxis häufig vernachlässigte Variantenvielfalt in den deutschen Rechtssprachen zu lenken. Focusing on the multi-faceted topic of Eurolects, this volume brings together knowledge and methodologies from various disciplines, including sociolinguistics, legal linguistics, corpus linguistics, and translation studies. The legislative varieties of eleven EU official and working languages (Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Latvian, Maltese, Polish, Spanish) are analyzed using corpus methodologies in order to investigate the variational dynamics and translation-induced patterns of the different languages. The underlying assumption is that, within the sociolinguistic continua of the EU languages, it is possible to single out specific legislative varieties (Eurolects) that originate at a supra-national level. This research hypothesis is strongly supported by the empirical findings derived from detailed corpus analyses of each language. This work represents the first systematic and comprehensive linguistic research conducted on a wide range of EU languages using the same protocol and applying corpus methodologies to the extensive Eurolect Observatory Multilingual Corpus.

Knowledge Communication as a research field emerges as a response to the communicative core challenges of the knowledge society. At ist center is the question of how to produce and transform specialized knowledge into interactions to gain value for this kind of knowledge. The field’s foundational concepts concern a transactional understanding of communication, an ideology of convergence between communicators and an appreciation of knowledge as construction. These stem from critical discussions of insights harvested from three parental disciplines: Language for Specific Purposes, Public Understanding of Science, and Knowledge Management. In their synthesis, these foundational concepts define Knowledge Communication as a means of strategic communication. In lieu of this, the research agenda of Knowledge Communication presents a novel prism through which to discern and investigate communicative core challenges of the knowledge society.
