Es recordado como el primer fotógrafo que realiza tomas de Bogotá, así como luego lo hará con las ruinas de la Acrópolis ateniense o los muelles de Londres, y uno de los primeros teóricos de la fotografía, creador de un estilo de representación gráfica de la ciudad.
