Diachronic linguistics has been experiencing a strong revival during the last few decades, since an increasing number of researchers have assumed that evolutionary and historical factors must be considered to properly understand how natural languages work. This book offers new data and insights on some of the research lines which are currently being developed within the framework of diachronic language research. The papers brought together in this volume are characterized both by their originality and by their methodological diversity; the reader will thus find herein theoretical as well as empirical works, undertaken from various perspectives of analysis (diachronic cognitive semantics, grammaticalization theory, discursive traditions, historical phraseology, etc.). The final outcome is an eclectic volume which offers valuable information for every reader, regardless of whether they are experienced linguists or junior researchers willing to know the latest epistemological advances in this discipline.

There are fewer distinctions in any language than there are distinct things in the universe. If, therefore, languages are ways of representing the universe, a primary function of their elements must be to allow the much more varied kinds of elements out of which the universe is made to be categorized in specific ways. A prototype approach to linguistic categories is a particular way of answering the question of how this categorization operates. It involves two claims. First, that linguistic categorization exploits principles that are not specific to language but characterize most, if not all, processes of cognition. Secondly, that a basic principle by which cognitive and linguistic categories are organized is the prototype principle, which assigns elements to a category not because they exemplify properties that are absolutely required of each one of its members, but because they exhibit, in varying degrees, certain types of similarity with a particular category member which has been established as the best example (or: prototype) of its kind. The development of the prototype approach into a satisfactory body of theory obviously requires both that its empirical base be enriched, and that its conceptual foundations be clarified. These are the areas where this volume, in its 26 essays, makes original contributions. The first two parts contain discussions in which various kinds of linguistic phenomena are analysed in ways that make essential use of prototype notions. The last two parts contain discussions in which prototype notions themselves become the object, rather than the instrument, of analytical scrutiny.

Dictionary Skills offers a comprehensive guide to mastering dictionary usage for effective language learning and vocabulary building. It emphasizes the importance of understanding a dictionary's structure, features, and the types of information it provides, such as pronunciation using phonetic symbols, etymology tracing a word's origin, and nuanced definitions. Proficiency in these skills empowers independent learning and confident communication, arguing that dictionaries are often underutilized resources. The book progresses systematically, exploring dictionary entries from pronunciation guides to synonyms and antonyms, and offers practical exercises to reinforce learning. It differentiates between various dictionary types, including monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, guiding readers to select the most appropriate tool. A key takeaway is how to actively incorporate new words into one's vocabulary using techniques like flashcards and mnemonic devices, moving beyond rote memorization. Unlike traditional approaches, Dictionary Skills emphasizes understanding the underlying principles of dictionary usage and vocabulary acquisition. This approach enables readers to become independent learners, fostering a lifelong love of language and improving overall communication skills in academic, professional, and personal settings.
