Dictionary of Indian Biography is a reference book of significant figures in Indian history, authored by Charles Edward Buckland. Dictionary of Indian Biography is somewhere between a dictionary and an encyclopedia. The work features short entries on individuals, both foreign and domestic, that have been historically significant in the development of Indian. The book examines the period from about the mid-18th century until 1900. While this time period may seem narrow, the work includes nearly three thousand entries in total. A typical entry includes the most important biographical information about the subject, as well as their historical significance to the development of India. As a book written by an Englishman, there is a wealth of information provided on other English individuals, in addition to the many entries about native Indians. Dictionary of Indian Biography is a good source of information on the lives of historically significant figures in India's development. The book has been copiously researched, and while Buckland seems to overemphasize the contributions of English colonialists, the work is typically handled in a relatively fair manner. Students and scholars seeking information on a specific individual or individuals will likely find Charles Edward Buckland's Dictionary of Indian Biography to be a worthwhile read. The included entries are detailed yet concisely presented, and when taken as a whole the text provides copious amounts of information on the history of India. Those interested in the subject matter will likely find this to be a fascinating volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Indian Biographical Dictionary, 1915 It is inevitable that a work of this kind, passed through the press under difficulties and during intervals of time snatched from a busy working day, should contain some typographical errors. The errata issued will, it is hoped, tend to clear most of these. The Editor craves the indulgence of the public in this matter. Every practicable suggestion intended to improve the utility of the book will, the Editor wishes to add here, receive his best attention when the time comes to issue the next edition. Excerpt from The Golden Book of India: A Genealogical and Biographical Dictionary of the Ruling Princes, Chiefs, Nobles, and Other, Personages, Titled or Decorated, of the Indian Empire The results of this neglect are already deplorable, and must ere long receive the attention of the Government of India. Indian titles are of cially de ned to be, either by grant from Government, i. e. a new creation by Her Imperial Majesty the Queen Empress through her representative; or "by descent, or by well-established usage." The Government alone can be the judge of the validity of claims, and of their relative strength, in the case of titles acquired by "descent" or by "well-established usage." And it is clear that this Royal Prerogative, to be properly used, ought to be exercised openly and publicly through the medium of a regular College or Chancery. It is, of course, true that the Foreign Department possesses a mass of more or less con dential information, and thoroughly ef cient machinery, for deciding all questions of the kind, when such questions are submitted to, or pressed upon, the notice of Government. But when that is not the case, there seems to be no public authority or accessible record for any of the ordinary Indian titles, or for the genealogy of the families holding hereditary titles. Much confusion has already arisen from this, and more is likely to arise. In the Lower Provinces of Bengal alone, there are at this moment some hundreds of families possessing, and not uncommonly using, titles derived from extinct dynasties or from common repute, yet not hitherto recognised formally by the British Government; and these, sometimes justly, but more frequently perhaps unjustly, are in this way placed in a false and invidious position. The State regulation of all these matters, in a plain and straightforward manner, would undoubtedly be hailed with pleasure in India by princes and people alike. In equal uncertainty is left, in many cases, the position of the descendants of ancient Indian royal and noble families; as also that of the Nobles of Feudatory States, the subjects of ruling and mediatised princes. Then, too, there is endless confusion in the banners, badges, and devices that are borne, either by the custom of the country or by personal assumption, by various families and individuals. Excerpt from Men Whom India Has Known: Biographies of Eminent Indian Characters Several of the additional biographies (about forty-nve) in this Edition are of men who are still alive but who have retired from active service. This is quite compatible with the title of the book. It should, however, be understood that biographies of distinguished men still I nd'ia are purposely omitted. Excerpt from Indian Biography, Containing the Lives of More Than Two Hundred Indian Chiefs Whoever expects here a preface of apologies, will loose but little time in finding a disappointment. We have none to make. All must acknowledge the great want of such a work, which is deemed a sufficient excuse for adding another title to the long catalogue of books. No exertions have been remitted, to render it as perfect as its magnitude would admit. It is the first general attempt to embody Indian history in the only proper manner. The following notices have been thrown together within a few months, although many years have elapsed since the author began the collection of materials, and set about gaining a knowledge of this kind of history. The first adventurer in any untrodden path, must often find himself embarrassed for want of landmarks, by which to direct his course. This will be apparent to the reader. But he will not be the first to whom it has been thus apparent. A small edition is now offered, which if well received, will be much improved and enlarged, and placed at the public disposal.
