The common names of plants often cause difficulties for translators or those engaged in international studies. Although used because they are easier for non-scientists to remember than Latin or Linnean names, one species may have several common names or one common name may be used for several species. The problem is greater for weed scientists because the confusion over common names can lead to misunderstandings over control measures or the importance of weed species. The proposal to list the common names of weeds in the European languages was made in 1972 by the Joint Panel of the Evaluation of Herbicides of the European Plant Protection Organisation, and the work continued by the Working Group on Education and Training of the European Weed Research Society. The result of their labours appears in two volumes. The first is Elsevier's Dictionary of Weeds of Western Europe which was published in 1982, since when it has been a valuable source of information on the common names and importance of weed species in the countries of Western Europe. Its companion volume is this new Dictionary of Weeds of Eastern Europe. Although several books exist which give common names of plants, there are none which have the range of languages covered in these two volumes or provide information on the importance of weed species. The new dictionary will undoubtedly prove to be as welcome and as useful as its predecessor to translators, weed/crop protection scientists, botanists, ecologists, and others.

Weeds are usually known to farmers and the general public by their common names. These names, which are obviously easier to remember than their corresponding Latin or Linnean names are also frequently used in non-scientific technical literature. The fact that one species may have several common names, while in some cases one name can apply to several species, creates much ambiguity and confusion - especially for those engaged in comparative studies or wishing to incorporate research done in other countries into their own work, as well as for translators working in this field.Although some European countries have attempted to solve this problem by producing official or semiofficial lists in which one common name is given for each species, some of these lists have only a limited circulation while not all authorities from the different countries are in agreement over which species should be classified as weeds. The Education Committee of the European Weed Research Society has gathered together national lists and attempted to remedy their deficiencies. The result is this dictionary - about 1,000 plant species have been classified giving the common name for each, where it exists, in all of the major European languages. An additional feature of the dictionary is that the importance of particular species as weeds in the different regions of Europe has been estimated. This multilingual dictionary should thus prove invaluable to all weed scientists, botanists, field ecologists, translators of technical literature and those involved in the international agrochemical industry.

The Danube written by Nick Thorpe and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-14 with History categories.

The magnificent Danube both cuts across and connects central Europe, flowing through and alongside ten countries: Romania, Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, and Germany. Travelling its full length from east to west, against the river’s flow, Nick Thorpe embarks on an inspiring year-long journey that leads to a new perspective on Europe today. Thorpe’s account is personal, conversational, funny, immediate, and uniquely observant—everything a reader expects in the best travel writing. Immersing himself in the Danube’s waters during daily morning swims, Thorpe likewise becomes immersed in the histories of the lands linked by the river. He observes the river’s ecological conditions, some discouraging and others hopeful, and encounters archaeological remains that whisper of human communities sustained by the river over eight millennia. Most fascinating of all are the ordinary and extraordinary people along the way—the ferrymen and fishermen, workers in the fields, shopkeepers, beekeepers, waitresses, smugglers and border policemen, legal and illegal immigrants, and many more. For readers who anticipate their own journeys on the Danube, as well as those who only dream of seeing the great river, this book will be a unique and treasured guide.
