Durante los años sesenta y setenta el conceptualismo en Latinoamérica jugó un papel diferente al europeo y norteamericano, en lo que primaba la institucionalización y comercialización del objeto artístico. En la cultura latinoamericana, sin embargo, el conceptualismo es una estrategia y no un estilo. Sus raíces bucean hasta principios del siglo XIX en los trabajos de Simón Rodríguez -tutor de Simón Bolívar-, y continúan hasta llegar al punto en el que el arte se entrecruza con la política -como sucede con el grupo argentino "Tucumán arde"-, y donde la política se entrecruza con el arte -como con el movimiento "Tupamaro" en Uruguay-. Conceptualism played a different role in Latin American art during the 1960s and 1970s than in Europe and the United States, where conceptualist artists predominantly sought to challenge the primacy of the art object and art institutions, as well as the commercialization of art. Latin American artists turned to conceptualism as a vehicle for radically questioning the very nature of art itself, as well as art's role in responding to societal needs and crises in conjunction with politics, poetry, and pedagogy. Because of this distinctive agenda, Latin American conceptualism must be viewed and understood in its own right, not as a derivative of Euroamerican models. In this book, one of Latin America's foremost conceptualist artists, Luis Camnitzer, offers a firsthand account of conceptualism in Latin American art. Placing the evolution of conceptualism within the history Latin America, he explores conceptualism as a strategy, rather than a style, in Latin American culture. He shows how the roots of conceptualism reach back to the early nineteenth century in the work of Símon Rodríguez, Símon Bolívar's tutor. Camnitzer then follows conceptualism to the point where art crossed into politics, as with the Argentinian group Tucumán arde in 1968, and where politics crossed into art, as with the Tupamaro movement in Uruguay during the 1960s and early 1970s. Camnitzer concludes by investigating how, after 1970, conceptualist manifestations returned to the fold of more conventional art and describes some of the consequences that followed when art evolved from being a political tool to become what is known as "political art."

Este libro es fruto del entrelazamiento de cuatro voces. Su origen se sitúa en la conversación que mantuvieron María Acaso y Luis Camnitzer, dos de las figuras que más han contribuido a cuestionar y replantear el papel y las relaciones entre el arte, la educación y el conocimiento desde el Art Thinking, con ocasión de los encuentros organizados en Medialab-Prado en febrero de 2015. Junto a ellos, Andrea De Pascual y David Lanau, quienes comisariaron la conversación para ofrecer en estas páginas una versión reelaborada y amplificada de las reflexiones de Acaso y Camnitzer, que dieron pie a exponer las suyas propias, así como sus inquietudes y experiencias en su trabajo como “arteducadoras” en el colectivo Pedagogías Invisibles. Desde la apuesta común de las cuatro de situar el pensamiento artístico como vertebrador de lo educativo, esta obra indaga en las tensiones y dicotomías que atraviesan las relaciones entre el arte y la educación, dos ámbitos tradicionalmente disociados, sobre todo en relación al estatuto y legitimación de sus saberes, profesionales e instituciones, abordadas aquí a través de las figuras del artista-museo y la profesora-escuela. Su análisis busca así superar esta visión dicotómica y promover el reconocimiento de otros aspectos y categorías de análisis –el carácter desordenado e “indisciplinado” del conocimiento; su carácter lúdico y poético, la delincuencia o desobediencia ligadas a las figuras de artista y docente; el potencial de la ignorancia activa para fomentar el autodidactismo; la necesidad de crear espacios alternativos al inmovilismo institucional, etc.– . Con ello han querido mostrar cómo la combinación de estas dos disciplinas puede servir de catalizador para la innovación pedagógica, el pensamiento crítico y la transformación social.

En el umbral del siglo XX hablar de globalización implica necesariamente identificar el origen y el significado del término. Implica también una aclaración histórica que ubique a la globalización de fin de siglo XX y de principios del XXI como una acentuación del proceso de mundialización del capitalismo en el mundo. No se trata entonces, de un proceso nuevo (aunque por supuesto en la actualidad adquiere particularidades inéditas); la primera globalización, el primer paso histórico de mundialización de la economía, se da con la invasión y la conquista de la porción de tierra que hoy conocemos como continente americano, por parte de algunos imperios europeos2. A partir de ese relevante hecho histórico (por sus profundas repercusiones y víctimas producidas) la sociedad mundial ha vivido y sufrido diversas etapas que han acentuado cada vez más la internacionalización de los procesos económicos de producción e intercambio. Pero la globalización entendida como una realidad histórica que se ha pronunciado en los últimos tiempos, no sólo ha consistido en una constante profundización y expansión de las relaciones económicas y el modelo de producción dominante en el planeta; la globalización se ha dado de manera más compleja y múltiple, abarcando prácticamente todos los ámbitos del quehacer humano. La globalización iniciada hace 5 siglos como ya dijimos, con el sometimiento y la destrucción parcial de las civilizaciones de nuestro continente (Mexicas, Mayas, etc.) y con la ocupación casi paralela de África, conlleva complejos procesos culturales, políticos, religiosos, ecológicos, etc.
