Das Phänomen "68" kann man jedoch nicht an einem bestimmten Ereignis oder einem bestimmten Datum festmachen. Genauso passierte "68" nicht nur im Jahr 1968, es war ein langer Prozess und eine Sammlung von Ereignissen, die sich in den 1960er Jahren abspielten. Begonnen mit dem Protest gegen die atomare Aufrüstung, fanden die Proteste ihren Höhepunkt bei denen sogar der friedlich protestierende Student Benno Ohnesorg starb. In der Arbeit werden die wichtigsten Ereignisse und Entwicklungen, die zu "68" geführt haben benannt und erläutert. Zunächst wird ein Überblick über die 1960er Jahre geschaffen werden. Dieser Teil beantwortet, was geschah, was das Geschehene in der Studentenschaft auslöste und welchen Beitrag die Jahre vor dem Umbruch zu 68 hatten. Später wird die Eskalation der Proteste erläutert. Die Schwerpunkte dabei liegen auf dem Schah-Besuch am 2. Juni 1967 und auf dem Attentat auf Rudi Dutschke. Diese Arbeit konzentriert sich lediglich auf die Geschehnisse der 68er in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Die 68er Bewegung war ein Phänomen, das in allen westlich geprägten Staaten auftrat. Das wird hier jedoch außer Acht gelassen.

Die Markteinführung der Pille in der Bundesrepublik 1961 eröffnete Frauen und jungen Mädchen neue Wege bei der Familienplanung und im Sexualverhalten: Die Verhütung wurde sicherer, die Anwendung einfacher, und die Verantwortung lag nun bei ihnen. Zugleich wurde öffentlich darüber debattiert, ob und wie die Pille die Sexualmoral der jungen Generation veränderte; moralische Bedenken prallten auf die Forderung nach sexueller Selbstbestimmung. Als mit der Frauenbewegung Anfang der 1970er Jahre das Private politisch wurde, forderten viele Frauen ein Umdenken in Bezug auf die Geschlechterrollen. Sie entwickelten ein neues Körperbewusstsein, infolgedessen sie die Pille wiederum häufig ablehnten. Die sexuellen und körperlichen Erfahrungen der Frauen, die in den 1960er Jahren mit der Pille verhüteten, unterschieden sich grundlegend von denen ihrer Mütter. Die Möglichkeiten der Pille waren eine stille generationelle Erfahrung, die Frauen mindestens so sehr prägte wie das politische Geschehen dieser Zeit, und die ihr Verhältnis zur Generation ihrer Mütter und zu Männern neu definierte.

Stereotypical descriptions showcase West Germany as an "economic miracle" or cast it in the narrow terms of Cold War politics. Such depictions neglect how material hardship preceded success and how a fascist past and communist sibling complicated the country's image as a bastion of democracy. Even more disappointing, they brush over a rich and variegated cultural history. That history is told here by leading scholars of German history, literature, and film in what is destined to become the volume on postwar West German culture and society. In it, we read about the lives of real people--from German children fathered by black Occupation soldiers to communist activists, from surviving Jews to Turkish "guest" workers, from young hoodlums to middle-class mothers. Greening Democracy explains how nuclear energy became a seminal political issue and motivated new democratic engagement in West Germany during the 1970s. Using interviews, as well as the archives of environmental organizations and the Green party, the book traces the development of anti-nuclear protest from the grassroots to parliaments. It argues that worries about specific nuclear reactors became the basis for a widespread anti-nuclear movement only after government officials' unrelenting support for nuclear energy caused reactor opponents to become concerned about the state of their democracy. Surprisingly, many citizens thought transnationally, looking abroad for protest strategies, cooperating with activists in other countries, and conceiving of 'Europe' as a potential means of circumventing recalcitrant officials. At this nexus between local action and global thinking, anti-nuclear protest became the basis for citizens' increasing engagement in self-governance, expanding their conception of democracy well beyond electoral politics and helping to make quotidian personal concerns political.
