Der Berliner Kunstwissenschaftler Horst Bredekamp hat in den späten 1970er und in den 1980er Jahren den zentralen Sammlungstyp der frühen Neuzeit, die Kunstkammer, wiederendeckt. Er hat die Reduktion der Kunstkammer auf eine unstrukturierte Ansammlung von Kuriositäten und Raritäten, die die ältere Forschung vorgenommen hat, zurückgewiesen und gezeigt, welche grundlegende epistemologische Bedeutung die Kunstkammer tatsächlich hatte und welchem offenen Kunst-Begriff sie verpflichtet war. 'Kunstkammer' gewissermaßen als Denkform: Dieser Gedanke lag dann auch um 2000 seinen Vorschlägen für das Konzept des Berliner Humboldt-Forums zugrunde. Die vorliegende Studie greift die Anregung Bredekamps auf und zeigt einerseits, wie die frühneuzeitlichen Utopien Campanellas, Andreaes und Bacons verstanden werden können als literarische Imaginationen von Kunstkammern in einer gesamtkunstwerkartigen Einheit von Erziehen, Lehren, Forschen und sozialem Leben. Andererseits führt sie diese Überlegung in der Untersuchung vieler Kunstkammerbeschreibungen fort und verfolgt den Weg, den die 'Einheit der Kunstkammer' in den wissenschaftlichen, kulturellen und sozialen Differenzierungsprozessen des 18. After the breakdown of socialist and communist systems in the East, it had become fashionable to declare the so-called "end of utopia" ("end of history," "end of narratives"). The authors of this volume do not share this view but think that it is time to rehabilitate utopian thought. The political concept of Utopia that has given its name to these transcendental projections onto the world has been too narrow to describe and analyze the moving forces of the mind perceiving human existence beyond reality. In Initiating the Millennium, Robert Collis and Natalie Bayer fill a substantial lacuna in the study of an initiatic society--known variously as the Illumin�s d'Avignon, the Avignon Society, the New Israel Society, and the Union--that flourished across Europe between 1779 and 1807. Based on hitherto neglected archival material, this study provides a wealth of fresh insights into a group that included members of various Christian confessions from countries spanning the length and breadth of the Continent. The founding members of this society forged a unique group that incorporated distinct strands of Western esotericism (particularly alchemy and arithmancy) within an all-pervading millenarian worldview. Collis and Bayer demonstrate that the doctrine of premillennialism--belief in the imminent advent of Christ's reign on Earth--soon came to constitute the raison d'�tre of the society. Using a chronological approach, the authors chart the machinations of the leading figures of the society (most notably the Polish gentleman Tadeusz Grabianka). They also examine the way in which the group reacted to and was impacted by the tumultuous events that rocked Europe during its twenty-eight years of existence. The result is a new understanding of the vital role played by the so-called Union within the wider millenarian and illuministic milieu at the close of the eighteenth century and beginning of the nineteenth century.
