Amerika! - Eine magische Anziehungskraft übt dieser Begriff bis heute auf die Menschen in aller Welt aus, wenn sich auch die Gründe dafür durch die Jahrhunderte verschoben haben mögen und die Art der Faszination eine andere geworden ist. Das Motiv steht programmatisch für die Aussicht auf Erfolg und Reichtum und übt den Reiz des Unbekannten aus. Hier richtet sich das Augenmerk auf die Verwendung des Amerika-Motives in der deutschen Lyrik der Frühen Neuzeit. Dies ist unter zwei Gesichtspunkten von Interesse: Zum einen muss davon ausgegangen werden, dass eine so fundamental neue Erfahrung wie die Entdeckung einer "Neuen Welt" die Aufmerksamkeit gerade der literarisch produktiven Zeitgenossen angeregt hat. Deshalb wird die Verwendung des Themas Amerika in der Frühen Neuzeit untersucht, da dies die Epoche ist in der die ersten Reflexe auf die Entdeckung zu finden sind. Zum anderen wurde die Gattung der Lyrik unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Verwendung des Amerika-Motivs in der deutschen Philologie noch kaum behandelt. Das Buch konzentriert sich auf vier Autoren, die die ganze Zeitspanne der Frühen Neuzeit abdecken. Dabei wird sowohl die erste lyrische Spiegelung Amerikas im "Narren Schyff" Sebastian Brants berücksichtigt, als auch, mit Christian Wernicke, ein Autor, der am Ende der Frühen Neuzeit auf der Schwelle zur Aufklärung steht. Für den Zeitraum dazwischen stehen Theodor de Bry, der weniger Dichter, als vielmehr Verleger und Kupferstecher war und mit seinen Stichen die Vorstellung über Amerika prägte, und der barocke Epigrammatiker Friedrich von Logau. Die Verwendung des Amerika-Motives in der Lyrik dieser vier Dichter wird hier detaillierten Einzelinterpretation unterzogen.
