Einleitung Das Fernsehen gehört heutzutage ebenso zum Alltag wie die tägliche Zeitung. Der Mensch hat sich an die Flimmerkiste gewöhnt und es gibt fast keinen deutschen Haushalt mehr ohne Fernseher. Seit der Amerikaner von ca. 50 Jahren als Befreier und Wiederaufbauer in unser Land kam, haben sich Dankbarkeit und Faszination für den amerikanischen Lebensstil miteinander vermischt. Das deutsche Fernsehen ist der Amerikanisierung ausgeliefert, da die amerikanischen Strategien des Medienmarktes nirgendwo überboten werden können, besonders der Filmexport boomt. Es gibt eine große Menge amerikanischer Produkte, Filme, Shows etc. die überall auf der Welt erworben, angeschaut oder nachvollzogen werden können. Die amerikanische Populärkultur hat die Welt erobert und es ist noch kein Ende in Sicht. Wenn erst das digitale Fernsehen mit Hunderten Fernsehsendern und Programmen installiert und verbreitet ist, wird die Amerikanisierung weiter und weiterströmen, noch viel mehr Anhänger finden und nicht mehr aufzuhalten sein. In dieser Hausarbeit wird die Amerikanisierung und ihr Verlauf anhand der Jugend- und Populärkultur in Deutschland erläutert und die Entwicklung der Medienflut in den letzten Jahren aufgezeigt. Des Weiteren wird auf die Vor- und Nachteile der Amerikanisierung in beiden deutschen Staaten und in den USA eingegangen und abschließend die heutige Mediensituation dargestellt.

Drawing on examples from history, culture studies, film, radio, and the arts, the authors explore the political and cultural parameters of Americanization and anti-Americanism, as reflected in the reception and rejection of American popular culture and, more generally, in European-American relations in the "American Century." Alexander Stephan is Professor of German, Ohio Eminent Scholar, and Senior Fellow of the Mershon Center for the Study of International Security and Public Policy at Ohio State University, where he directs a project on American culture and anti-Americanism in Europe and the world.

While there is already a huge research literature marked by the sociology of technology, the analyses gathered in this volume try to go beyond classical sociological approaches. Rather, the idea is that crossing traditional boundaries will lead to new results when it comes to understanding the effects of technologies. This idea is based on the assumption that the implementation of technology in daily life is no longer directly associated with binaries such as "technology - nature", "object - subject", "alienated and creative activities", "social determination and self-determination", "material culture and social practices" or "interactive communication and mediated communication". In fact, technology gains social relevance as it is uniquely embedded into cultural practices. So far, this argument holds espe'cially true for analyses within the sociology of culture, ethnome'thodology and related fields. While these fields have primarily dealt with "old" technologies like communication skills, body performances or trained craftsmanship, their fundamental argument should be extended to the more advanced technologies and to the use of latest high-tech.

What is the work of film in the age of transnational production? To answer that question, Randall Halle focuses on the film industry of Germany, one of Europe's largest film markets and one of the world's largest film-producing nations. In the 1990s Germany experienced an extreme transition from a state-subsidized mode of film production that was free of anxious concerns about profit and audience entertainment to a mode dominated by private interest and big capital. At the same time, the European Union began actively drawing together the national markets of Germany and other European nations, sublating their individual significances into a synergistic whole. This book studies these changes broadly, but also focuses on the transformations in their particular national context. It balances film politics and film aesthetics, tracing transformations in financing along with analyses of particular films to describe the effects on the film object itself. Halle concludes that we witness currently the emergence of a new transnational aesthetic, a fundamental shift in cultural production with ramifications for communal identifications, state cohesion, and national economies.
