Im Zeitalter der Aufklärung, schreibt Kondylis, stellt sich das Problem der Sinnlichkeit auf eine besonders dringliche Weise, und so auch dasjenige ihrer Beziehung zum Geist. »Die Aufklärung musste diese Frage so nachdrücklich stellen, da in der Rehabilitation der Sinnlichkeit eine ihrer wichtigsten weltanschaulichen Waffen im Kampfe gegen die theologische Ontologie und Moral bestand. Zugleich lag hier einer der Nervenpunkte neuzeitlichen Denkens überhaupt. Denn die Rehabilitation der Sinnlichkeit warf ungeheure logische Probleme auf, deren Bewältigung um so dringender war, je unumgänglicher und unentbehrlicher die genannte Rehabilitation in dieser oder jener Form erschien.« Geleitet durch die Grundannahme, Denken sei wesentlich polemisch, nimmt Kondylis die verschiedenen Positionen dieser Diskussionen unter die Lupe, denn die Vielfalt der Antworten, der sich die Frage nach der Einheit der Aufklärung stellen muss, erschließt sich am besten von den polemischen Bedürfnissen der Fragenden aus.
