Die "Allgemeine Zeitung", die von den berühmten Stuttgarter Verlegern Johann Friedrich Cotta und seinem Sohn Georg von Cotta herausgegeben wurde, konnte sich in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu der bedeutendsten europäischen und zu einer in ihrer Art nahezu konkurrenzlosen Zeitung entwickeln. Die Voraussetzungen dazu sicherten der Standort des Cottaschen Zweigunternehmens in Augsburg, mit seinen traditionell günstigen Verkehrverbindungen, und die zahlreichen Privilegien, die die Zeitung vom bayerischen König erhielt. Der Verlag der "Allgemeinen Zeitung" war ein Wirtschaftsunternehmen, das auf Rentabilität abzielen mußte und gleichzeitig umfassende Informationen auf hohem Niveau bieten wollte. Die Unterdrückung der freien Meinungsäußerung im Vormärz und eine bayerische Pressepolitik, deren vorherrschendes Merkmal das Instrument der Vorzensur war, forderte daher die Kooperation der Redakteure mit den Zensurbehörden. Die Stuttgarter Großverleger sowie ihre Augsburger Mitarbeiter mußten also ständig versuchen, die Grenzen der von der Regierung erlaubten Berichterstattung auszuloten, sie aber nicht zu überschreiten. Nur so konnten sie ein Blatt schaffen, für das sich die Öffentlichkeit immer stärker interessierte und das folgerichtig bis 1848 immer mehr Abonnenten bekam. Ein Verbot einzelner Artikel bzw. Formulierungen war stets an der Tagesordnung, das Verbot der Zeitung selbst durfte jedoch nicht riskiert werden. Erstmals wird gezeigt, wie intensiv die Kontakte zwischen Redakteuren und ihren Zensoren waren. Eine Sozialgeschichte der Zensoren wird skizziert, der Arbeitsalltag in einer Zeitungsredaktion zwischen Zensur und dem Anspruch, eine 'liberale' Zeitung herzustellen, geschildert. Die wirtschaftliche Situation des Augsburger Verlagsunternehmens mit der Untersuchung seiner Absatzzahlen, der Vertriebsstruktur und der betriebswirtschaftlichen Situation wird erstmals in Bezug zur bayerischen Pressepolitik gesetzt. Die Zensur der "Allgemeinen Zeitung" in den Jahren von 1815 bis 1848 verdeutlicht, in welch hohem Maße nicht nur die Zeitung, sondern auch die bayerische Pressepolitik von der europäischen Politik abhängig war und welchen gravierenden Schwankungen sie unterlag.

The effects -- both inhibitory and creative -- of the 1819-1848 censorship on German-language literary writing. In 1819, the German Confederation promulgated the infamous "Carlsbad Decrees," establishing censorship standards aimed at thwarting the political aspirations of post-Napoleonic Germany's rapidly emerging public sphere. This most comprehensive system of state censorship to that point in German lands remained in place until the revolutions of 1848, and is widely acknowledged to have had a profound influence on public discourse. However, although censorship during the period has been the object of much scholarly interest, little is known about its precise effects on literary writing. This book redresses that situation through detailed studies of six works composed and published in different parts of the Confederation by three prominent writers: Christian Dietrich Grabbe, Heinrich Heine, and Franz Grillparzer. By analyzing successive versions of these works, the study illustrates the thematic, linguistic, and aesthetic constraints censorship placed upon their writing, as well as the variety of literary evasion strategies that it stimulated. It demonstrates that while censorship inhibited and distorted German literary writing, it also led to the emergence of distinctively complex and inventive modes of literary expression that came to mark the epoch. Katy Heady received her PhD in German from the University of Sheffield in 2007.

How did ministers, journalists, academics, artists, and subjects in the German lands imagine war during the nineteenth century? The Napoleonic Wars had been the bloodiest in Europe's history, directly affecting millions of Germans, yet their long-term consequences on individuals and on 'politics' are still poorly understood. This study makes sense of contemporaries' memories and histories of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic campaigns within a much wider context of press reportage of wars elsewhere in Europe and overseas, debates about military service and the reform of Germany's armies, revolution and counter-revolution, and individuals' experiences of violence and death in their everyday lives. For the majority of the populations of the German states, wars during an era of conscription were not merely a matter of history and memory; rather, they concerned subjects' hopes, fears, and expectations of the future. This is the second volume of Mark Hewitson's study of the violence of war in the German lands during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It investigates the complex relationship between military conflicts and the violent acts of individual soldiers. In particular, it considers the contradictory impact of 'pacification' in civilian life and exposure to increasingly destructive technologies of killing during war-time. This contradiction reached its nineteenth-century apogee during the 'wars of unification', leaving an ambiguous imprint on post-war discussions of military conflict.

Moving book history in a new direction, this study examines publishers as brokers of Central Europe's political public sphere. They created international print markets, translated new texts, launched new journals, supported outspoken authors, and experimented with popular formats. Most of all, they contested censorship with finesse and resolve, thereby undermining the aim of Prussia and Austria to criminalize democratic thought. By packaging dissent through popular media, publishers cultivated broad readerships, promoted political literacy, and refashioned citizenship ideals. As political actors, intellectual midwives, and cultural mediators, publishers speak to a broad range of scholarly interests. Their outsize personalities, their entrepreneurial zeal, and their publishing achievements portray how print markets shaped the political world.The narrow perimeters of political communication in the late-absolutist states of Prussia and Austria curtailed the open market of ideas. The publishing industry contested this information order, working both within and outside legal parameters to create a modern public sphere. Their expansion of print markets, their cat-and-mouse game with censors, and their ingenuity in packaging political commentary sheds light on the production and reception of dissent. Against the backdrop of censorship and police surveillance, the successes and failures of these citizens of print tell us much about nineteenth-century civil society and Central Europe's tortuous pathway to political modernization. Cutting across a range of disciplines, this study will engage social and political historians as well as scholars of publishing, literary criticism, cultural studies, translation, and the public sphere. The history of Central Europe's print markets between Napoleon and the era of unification doubles as a political tale. It sheds important new light on political communication and how publishers exposed German-language readers to the Age of Democratic Revolution.

Despite the large number of books and studies written about Metternich, there is still a period of his political career that scholars neglect to this day, the 1840s. This book offers an analysis of Metternich's German policy in the years 1840–1848 and thus fills a gap in Metternich studies. Analysing this period is important due to the fact that over the course of those less than nine years, Metternich lost his influence within the German Confederation. He represented a certain way of behaving – moderate, calm and reconciliatory – but it was an attitude which was rejected during the period of rising mass nationalism. Nevertheless, he continued to endeavour to steer this escalating nationalism, and by applying calming policies prevent it from causing armed conflicts in Europe. Since Metternich conceived the German Confederation at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 as one of the pillars of the European peace settlement, the issue is viewed from the perspective of European crises of the time, from the Rhine Crisis to the Swiss civil war. Similarly, it presents his policy in a broader context of economic and social history. The book follows revisionist research on Metternich and refutes some of the clichés still associated with his policy.
