Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Wer sich mit der gegenwärtigen Situation der Volkshochschulen (VHS) in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland beschäftigt, wird nicht umhin kommen festzustellen, daß diese vor einer Reihe von Herausforderungen stehen, die eine Umbruchsituation kennzeichnen. Dementsprechend sind in der einschlägigen Fachliteratur der jüngeren Vergangenheit eine Vielzahl von Publikationen erschienen, die sich mit neuen Herausforderungen an die Volkshochschule auseinandersetzen. Zunächst einmal geht es dabei darum, daß die Vermarktung der Volkshochschule, sei es in der Leistungs- oder Programmgestaltung, nach professionelleren Gesichtspunkten betrieben werden soll. Dabei wird von vielen Seiten gefordert, daß die VHS ein marktgängigeres Profil erhalten und sich in ihrer Arbeit stärker danach ausrichten solle, was sich am Markt auch absetzen läßt. Die im Zusammenhang dieser Arbeit entscheidende Leitfrage lautet also: Stehen Bildung und Ökonomie tatsächlich in einem kaum auflösbaren Widerspruch oder ist es möglich, eine Neugestaltung der Volkshochschulen mit Hilfe von Marketing-Konzepten erfolgreich durchzuführen, ohne deren pädagogisches Profil zu konterkarieren oder zu zerstören? Das zentrale Anliegen dieser Arbeit ist nun, der soeben formulierten Leitfrage im einzelnen nachzugehen und dabei Möglichkeiten einer Synthese auszuloten. Gang der Untersuchung: Im zweiten Kapitel geht es zunächst darum, die Rahmenbedingungen, unter denen sich die zentrale Debatte Marktgängigkeit contra Bildungsauftrag vollzieht, zu untersuchen. Dafür ist es notwendig, die heutige Weiterbildungslandschaft kurz zu skizzieren und insbesondere näher darauf einzugehen, warum heute von einem Weiterbildungsmarkt gesprochen wird, wodurch sich Weiterbildung als öffentliche Aufgabe auszeichnet und welche Zielsetzungen und programmatischen Paradigmen an Weiterbildung geknüpft werden. Nach diesen Fragen gilt es, sich der besonderen Stellung der Volkshochschulen in diesem Weiterbildungsmarkt zuzuwenden und auf die neuen Herausforderungen näher einzugehen, die bereits in diesen einleitenden Ausführungen angerissen worden sind. Im dritten Kapitel soll dann das "Zauberwort Marketing" mit Inhalt gefüllt werden. Hannah Arendt was born in Germany in 1906 and lived in America from 1941 until her death in 1975. Thus her life spanned the tumultuous years of the twentieth century, as did her thought. She did not consider herself a philosopher, though she studied and maintained close relationships with two great philosophers—Karl Jaspers and Martin Heidegger—throughout their lives. She was a thinker, in search not of metaphysical truth but of the meaning of appearances and events. The term scarcely ever appears nowadays in a scientific description of living things, but we humans may nonetheless find the colors, patterns, and songs of animals to be beautiful in apparently the same way that we see beauty in works of art. In Animal Beauty, Nobel Prize–winning biologist Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard describes how the colors and patterns displayed by animals arise, what they communicate, and how they function in the social life of animals. Watercolor drawings illustrate these amazing instances of animal beauty. Darwin addressed the topic of ornament in his 1871 book The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex, and did not hesitate to engage with criteria of beauty, convinced that animals experienced color and ornament as attractive and agreeable in the same way that we do, and that the role this played in mate choice pointed to a “sexual selection” distinct from natural selection. Nüsslein-Volhard examines key examples of ornament and sexual selection in the animal kingdom and lays the groundwork for biological aesthetics. Noting that color patterns have not been a research priority—perhaps because they appeared to be nonessential luxuries rather than functional necessities—Nüsslein-Volhard looks at recent scientific developments on the topic. In part because of Nüsslein-Volhard's own research on the zebrafish, it is now possible to decipher the molecular genetic mechanisms that lead to production of colors in animal skin and its appendages and control its pattern and distribution.
