Zum genuinen Bestandteil eines Staates gehören eindeutig definierte Grenzen. Vom Mittelalter bis an das Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts wurden sie verbal beschrieben, materiell und symbolisch markiert und schließlich auch kartographisch vermessen, um eine Herrschaft in ihren räumlichen Dimensionen zu repräsentieren. Die Studie analysiert die Akte territorialer Grenzziehung und ihre Bedeutung für die Entstehung politischer Räume im Heiligen Römischen Reich. Die Territorien des Reiches werden auf breiter Quellengrundlage und unter Einbeziehung westeuropäischer Vergleichsbeispiele untersucht, regionale Schwerpunkte bilden Franken, Bayern, das Rheinland und Westfalen. Dabei zielt die Untersuchung auf eine allgemeine Modellbildung zur Genese räumlich-territorialer Herrschaft in der Vormoderne. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Verfahren zur Beschreibung und Markierung von Grenzen und deren intermediales Zusammenspiel. Eine besondere Bedeutung kommt in diesem Zusammenhang der herrschaftlichen Nutzung der Kartographie zu. Mit ihrem epochenübergreifenden Fokus auf politische Räume und deren Beschreibung und Visualisierung stellt der Band sowohl für die allgemeine Geschichtswissenschaft und die Landesgeschichte als auch für Kunstgeschichte, Kartographiegeschichte und Historische Geographie eine wichtige Neuerscheinung dar.

This volume examines the Epistle to the Colossians as a pseudepigraphic letter. It is concerned with how different traditions associated with Paul and his thought were appropriated by Pauline communities in the aftermath of his death. Extensive attention is paid to the possibility of Colossians' interaction with oral traditions, which includes consideration of the oral context for Paul's own correspondence and ministry. In recovering these traditions, Colossians creates a heavenly letter and a testament, designed so as to assure readers of the apostle's ongoing aid and to interpret the theological significance of his death. The analysis of different literary and rhetorical characteristics of Colossians (pseudephigraphy, orality, etc.) is placed within the context of both contemporaneous Jewish (esp. Sapiential) traditions and the traditions of the Greco-Roman philosophic schools. One chapter deals with the origin and purpose of the 'Haustafel'.

In the Holy Roman Empire 'no prince... can forbid men passage in the common road', wrote the English jurist John Selden. In practice, moving through one the most fractured landscapes in human history was rarely as straightforward as suggested by Selden's account of the German 'liberty of passage'. Across the Old Reich, mobile populations-from emperors to peasants-defied attempts to channel their mobility with actions ranging from mockery to bloodshed. In this study, Luca Scholz charts this contentious ordering of movement through the lens of safe conduct, an institution that was common throughout the early modern world but became a key framework for negotiating freedom of movement and its restriction in the Empire. Borders and Freedom of Movement in the Holy Roman Empire draws on sources discovered in twenty archives, from newly unearthed drawings to first-hand accounts by peasants, princes, and prisoners. Scholz's maps shift the focus from the border to the thoroughfare to show that controls of moving goods and people were rarely concentrated at borders before the mid-eighteenth century. Uncovering a forgotten chapter in the history of free movement, the author presents a new look at the unstable relationship of political authority and human mobility in the heartlands of old-regime Europe.

The integration of audible space is a central aspect of electroacoustic music. Ever since the earliest analogue days of electroacoustic music, pioneers of the genre - including Pierre Schaeffer, Iannis Xenakis, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Luigi Nono - used special devices and methods for their compositions and refined the possibilities of integrating the sound of space into music. In this anthology, analytical portraits of compositions and groups of compositions show the wide spectrum of spatial practices in early electroacoustic music. Additionally, retrospective views on the use of spatial composition in earlier epochs and in instrumental music of the 20th century portray the practice of spatial composition in different eras and genres, as well as the universality of spatial music as a topic. This guide provides an overview of the thematic areas, analytical aspects, and avenues of research which, together, form a broader conversation around doing spatial history. Spatial history is not a field with clearly delineated boundaries. For the most part, it lacks a distinct, unambiguous scholarly identity. It can only be thought of in relation to other, typically more established fields. Indeed, one of the most valuable utilities of spatial history is its capacity to facilitate conversations across those fields. Consequently, it must be discussed in relation to a variety of historiographical contexts. Each of these have their own intellectual genealogies, institutional settings, and conceptual path dependencies. With this in mind, this guide surveys the following areas: territoriality, infrastructure, and borders; nature, environment, and landscape; city and home; social space and political protest; spaces of knowledge; spatial imaginaries; cartographic representations; and historical GIS research.
