Das Buch untersucht die Entwicklung der Brauerei Zipf im Rahmen der österreichischen Brauindustrie. Schwerpunkt dabei ist die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus, als der V2-Rüstungsbetrieb "Schlier" und ein KZ-Außenlager von Mauthausen den Betrieb der Brauerei maßgeblich beeinflussten sowie deren schwierige Abwicklung nach dem Krieg. Ausgehend von einer Analyse der Anfänge und des Wachstums der Brauerei Zipf von 1858 bis 1938 vor dem Hintergrund der Geschichte der österreichischen Brauindustrie untersucht das Buch die Entwicklung der Brauerei Zipf während der Zwischenkriegszeit. Anschließend wird auf die Umgestaltung des Wirtschaftslebens durch die neuen NS-Machthaber nach dem Anschluss 1938 ebenso eingegangen wie auf die Einquartierung des V2-Rüstungsbetriebes "Schlier" und die Errichtung des entsprechenden KZ-Außenlagers von Mauthausen. Die Rolle der Brauerei bei diesen Entwicklungen und die sich daraus für den Wirtschaftsbetrieb ergebenden Konsequenzen werden beleuchtet. Abgerundet wird die Studie von einer Besprechung der langwierigen Abwicklung des Rüstungsbetriebes sowie einem Überblick über die Entwicklung bis in die 1970er Jahre.

When looking at the early modern period (c. 1500–c. 1800), we often speak of "the military" or "the army". But what exactly do we mean when using these terms? The forms and structures of the armed forces have not only changed between 1500 and 1800, but also varied throughout different regions of the world and even within Europe. The contributors to this volume examine twelve early modern examples of armed forces in the Holy Roman Empire, Western and Eastern Europe, Eastern Asia and North America and paint a multifarious and even disparate picture during this period. The findings suggest that modern notions of the armed forces common in the early modern period should be used more prudently to avoid prevalent implications of non-existing continuity and uniformity.

The volume focuses on emerging "rooms for manoeuvre" in the socialist societies of Central and Eastern Europe after the Second World War. This volume addresses an issue that was until recently taboo: children fathered by Black American GIs who were stationed in Europe during and after World War II and whose mothers were local citizens. They were born into societies that defined themselves as White and rejected this extremely visible portion of the so-called occupation children. Black and White are in this volume not (only) understood as descriptions of skin color, but above all as social constructs and political categories with racist attributions and effects. The authors of the contributions examine the manner in which these mixed-race children and their mothers were treated by their societies and the respective authorities; they assess the experiences and self-understandings of the individuals affected; they discuss their institutionalization and the strategy practiced by the youth welfare agencies of giving these children up for adoption abroad; and finally they highlight how African American couples in the USA interpreted the adoption of these mixed-race children from Europe as an act of Black resistance against White supremacy.

The withdrawal of Soviet troops is a so far largely unresearched process of international political and military reorganization after 1989/90, which was accompanied by political, economic, social and geopolitical factors that had different effects in different nations. The anthology contains national studies that examine the withdrawal from a scientific perspective. But it also analyses the international conditions that led to the geopolitical reorganization and reduction of weapons. In addition to the country studies, the reforms and the collapse of the Soviet empire are examined from a military-political perspective in order to make the conditions for returning home understandable. Finally, the legacy of the retreat is also considered in the light of current policies and the current threats to the countries of East Central Europe from the increasing aggression in this geopolitical space.
