In seinem Bestreben, die Zeitgrenze des eigenen Lebens zu durchbrechen und mit seinem Anliegen in zukünftige Generationen hineinzuwirken, schafft er ein Gebilde, das darauf angelegt ist, dem historischen Wandel für immer zu trotzen. Doch weder die Tradierung der Stiftungszwecke noch die Konservierung des Stiftungsvermögens, die Stabilisierung der Stiftungsverwaltung oder die Perpetuierung des Stiftungsvollzugs erweisen sich über kurz oder lang als Selbstläufer. Tillmann Lohse untersucht das unabschließbare Ringen um die Dauer der Stiftung in diachronisch vergleichender Perspektive am Beispiel des weltlichen Kollegiatstifts St. Simon und Judas in Goslar, das Mitte des 11. Jahrhunderts von Kaiser Heinrich III. gegründet worden war. In einem Quellenanhang werden vier zentrale Zeugnisse der beinahe tausendjährigen Stiftungsgeschichte in kritischen Editionen neu bzw. erstmals herausgegeben: das Urbar von ca. 1191/94, die Chroniken aus dem 14. und 15. Jahrhundert, der Liber Ordinarius von 1435 sowie Auszüge aus dem Brevier des Stifts von 1522.
