Im Mittelpunkt der Studie steht eine zentrale Frage der DDR-Geschichte: das spannungsreiche Verhältnis von Außen- und Innenpolitik im Rahmen des KSZE-Prozesses, der die SED vor gravierende Probleme stellte. Der außenpolitische Prestigegewinn, der 1975 aus der Unterzeichnung der Schlussakte von Helsinki resultierte, war nämlich teuer erkauft: Unzufriedene DDR-Bürger konnten sich fortan auf die humanitären und menschenrechtlichen Bestimmungen der KSZE-Schlussakte berufen, die auch die SED-Führung akzeptiert hatte - allerdings nur zähneknirschend, weil sie die damit verbundene Gefährdung ihrer Macht durchaus erkannte. Anja Hanisch zeigt, wie die DDR-Führung diesem Dilemma in den KSZE-Verhandlungen zu entrinnen versuchte, wie massiv die ostdeutsche Gesellschaft auf die Liberalisierungsverheißung von Helsinki reagierte und wie der repressive Staat mit dem neuen Druck umging, der von innen und außen nach 1975 auf ihm lastete. Anja Hanisch wurde für ihre Dissertation mit dem Nachwuchspreis der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft 2012 ausgezeichnet.

Debates on the role of Christian Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe too often remain strongly tied to national historiographies. With the edited collection the contributing authors aim to reconstruct Christian Democracy’s role in the fall of Communism from a bird's-eye perspective by covering the entire region and by taking “third-way” options in the broader political imaginary of late-Cold War Europe into account. This edited volume analyses European socialist countries’ strategy of engagement with the West and the European Economic Community in the long 1970s. Richardson-Little exposes the forgotten history of human rights in the German Democratic Republic, placing the history of the Cold War, Eastern European dissidents and the revolutions of 1989 in a new light. By demonstrating how even a communist dictatorship could imagine itself to be a champion of human rights, this book challenges popular narratives on the fall of the Berlin Wall and illustrates how notions of human rights evolved in the Cold War as they were re-imagined in East Germany by both dissidents and state officials. Ultimately, the fight for human rights in East Germany was part of a global battle in the post-war era over competing conceptions of what human rights meant. Nonetheless, the collapse of dictatorship in East Germany did not end this conflict, as citizens had to choose for themselves what kind of human rights would follow in its wake.
