Licht in die Köpfe zu bringen war das erklärte Ziel der Aufklärer: Wie nirgends sonst wurde die Aufklärung im Fürstentum Anhalt-Dessau demonstrativ praktiziert. Seit der Berufung des verketzerten Johann Bernhard Basedow (1724-1790), der 1774 das Philanthropin (eine Erziehungsanstalt) gründete, war Dessau-Wörlitz in aller Munde. Hirsch mustert kritisch alle Bereiche des gesellschaftlichen Lebens an Hand der oft enthusiastischen Lobreden der Besucher und der Publizistik über dieses Zentrum der Aufklärung, wo man Vorurteile abbaute, die Emanzipation der Juden voranbrachte und in einem Gartenreich die pädagogische Provinz und den "Friedensstaat" der Aufklärung verwirklichte.

Rabbi Samuel Hirsch (Thalfang 1815 – Chicago 1889) was instrumental in the development of Reform Judaism in Europe and the USA. This volume is the first lengthy publication devoted to this striking personality whose significance was no less than that of his contemporaries Abraham Geiger and David Einhorn. En route from Thalfang via Dessau and Luxembourg to Philadelphia, Hirsch left his mark on societal, religious, and philosophical developments in manifold ways. By the time he was appointed Chief Rabbi of the Jewish community in Luxembourg in 1843, he had already written many of his most important works on the philosophy of religion. In them he engaged in debate with the Young Hegelians on the importance of Judaism, the religion that, more than any other, enabled the human actualization of freedom so central to Hegel’s philosophy. Over time Hirsch took an increasingly radical stance on issues such as Jewish rituals and mixed marriage. The goal of his reforms was not assimilation. He strove to strengthen Judaism to meet the demands of modernity and enable its survival in the modern era. Hirsch’s story is key to understanding the transnational history of Reform Judaism and the struggle of Jews to secure a place in history and society.

Shifting the focus from the medical use of spas to their cultural and social functions, this study shows that eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century German spas served a vital role as spaces where new ways of perceiving the natural environment and conceptualizing society were disseminated. Although spas continued to be places of health and healing, their function and perception in central Europe changed fundamentally around the middle of the eighteenth century. This transformation of the role of the spa occurred in two ways. First, the spa popularized a new perception of the landscape with a preference for mountains and the seacoast, forming the basis for the cultural assumptions underlying modern tourism. Second, contemporaries perceived spas as meeting places comparable to institutions of Enlightenment sociability like coffeehouses, salons, and Masonic lodges. Spas were conceived as spaces where the nobility and the bourgeoisie could interact on an equal footing, thereby overcoming the constraints of early modern social boundaries. These changes were negotiated through both personal interactions at spas and an increasingly sophisticated published spa discourse. The late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century German spa thus helped to bring about social and cultural modernity.

Im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert entwickelte sich der Buchhandel zu einer modernen Wirtschaftsbranche. Gleichzeitig entstand das Bild des freien Schriftstellers, der versuchte von seiner literarischen Arbeit zu leben. Doch das fehlende Urheberrecht machte dies nahezu unmoglich. Der Selbstverlag bot eine Moglichkeit, okonomische und rechtliche Interessen selbst durchzusetzen. Diese Versuche scheiterten meistens an mangelnden Vertriebswegen. Die Buchhandlung der Gelehrten, 1781 in Dessau gegrundet und von der Verlagskasse fur Gelehrte und Kunstler unterstutzt, organisierte den Selbstverlag fur ihre Autoren und vertrat deren Anliegen gegenuber dem Buchhandel. Dieses den beiden Unternehmen zugrunde gelegte Konzept war einzigartig und bildete den Hohepunkt in der Geschichte des Selbstverlages, der nach dem Scheitern der Gelehrtenbuchhandlung ein vorlaufiges Ende fand. Die Arbeit stutzt sich vorwiegend auf Quellen, da eine detaillierte Monographie bislang fehlt. Sie stellt die Geschichte des Selbstverlagsunternehmens dar und rekonstruiert ihr Programm, in dem auch bekannte Autoren wie Johann Gottfried Herder und Christoph Martin Wieland erschienen. Die Analyse der Reaktionen von Seiten der Autoren und des Buchhandels zeigt die Grunde fur das Scheitern. Ein Ausblick auf die weitere Entwicklung des Selbstverlages rundet das Buch ab.

Wenn unter ›Aufklärung‹ »Kritik« verstanden wird, »der sich alles unterwerfen mu߫ und davon weder Religion noch die Majestät eines Herrschers ausgenommen sind, wird diese Aufklärung ohne pejorative Konnotation als ›radikal‹ bezeichnet. Ein radikaler Aufklärer ist bereit, die Wurzeln einer Sache infrage zu stellen und nimmt in Kauf, dass der untersuchte Gegenstand im Zweifelsfall reformiert, abgeschafft oder gar zerstört wird. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, anhand der Schriften von Karl von Knoblauch, Andreas Riem und Johann Christian Schmohl einen Ausschnitt des auch in Deutschland äußerst vielschichtigen Phänomens der Aufklärung zu untersuchen, um die oft sehr homogen dargestellte deutschsprachige Aufklärung differenzierter zu beschreiben. Die Werke der Autoren werden mit Blick auf vorhandene oder nicht vorhandene Radikalität vergleichend und diskursiv wie biographisch einordnend analysiert. Sie gehören alle drei einer Generation an und beschäftigten sich mit ähnlichen Themen. Dennoch entstammen sie unterschiedlichen Schichten, wie der des Adels, des Bürgertums und des Bauernstandes. Sie bestätigen das Bild einer heterogenen Aufklärung, deren Ausprägung weder thematisch noch inhaltlich festgelegt ist.
