Excerpt from Die Deutsche Dichtung im Mittelalter, 800 bis 1500 Die vorliegende Geschichte der altdeutschen Dichtung sucht die übersichtliche, zusammenhangende Erzählung der literarischen Entwicklung mit der Charakteristik der einzelnen Werke zu verbinden. Die wichtigsten altdeutschen Denkmäler sollen dem Leser nach Form und Gehalt möglichst klar vor Augen treten; in besonderen Fällen sind die wissenschaftlichen Streitfragen, um deren Lösung die Forschung sich bemüht, hervorgehoben. Vollständige Aufzählung sämtlicher altdeutscher Denkmäler ist keineswegs beabsichtigt, vielmehr galt es nur, das wvesentliche und Wichtige vorzuführen. Diesem Zwecke dienen auch die literarischen Nachweise am Schlüsse des Bandes, die sich auf Nennung der neusten Ausgaben und Abhandlungen wo der Leser alles Weitere findet, beschränken. Ich habe bereits 1891 fur Kürschners deutsche Nationalliteratur eine Geschichte der deutschen Dichtung von den ersten Anfängen bis zum Ausgang des Mittelalters geschrieben. Die heutige neue Darstellung, die auf Wunsch und Anregung des Herrn Verlegers verfaßt wurde, hat mit dem früheren Buche wenig gemein. Nicht nur der wissenschaftliche Zuwachs, sondern auch die ganze Anlage bedingten eine wesentlich verschiedene Be handlung der Aufgabe. So gebe ich das Buch hinaus mit dem Wunsche, daß es mit und neben den andern Literaturgeschichten des Mittelalters zur Erkenntnis des altdeutschen Schrifttums bei trage, daß es tauglich erfunden werde, den Laien zu den Schätzen der altdeutschen Dichtung heranzuführen und dem Studierenden eine bequeme und willkommene Übersicht und Zusammenfassung zu bieten. This volume represents a contribution to comparative scholarship in Medieval and Renaissance studies in its investigation of the ingenious diversity of roguish practices found in Medieval and Renaissance literature and its recognition of the coherent normative function of tales of tricksters and pranksters. The wide variety of works analysed, from those forming part of the established canon of texts on undergraduate degree schemes to lesser-known works, makes the volume of interest to students and researchers alike. The roguish behaviour of women, priests, foxes and outlaws and the knavery of Eulenspiegel and Panurge are used to illustrate how rituals of inversion and humiliation typical of the medieval carnival are reflected in literary accounts of trickery, and to question whether the restorative function attributed to carnival celebration is equally to be found in the intra-textual and extra-textual outcomes of trickery. This analysis is supported by studies into the trickster in mythology, sociological investigations into the role of disorder, Bakhtinian theories of carnival and the carnivalesque, and theories of black humour.
