Das 1971 in Paris erschienene und bislang nur ins Englische übersetzte Standardwerk wird nun erst mals in deutscher Sprache herausgegeben. Auf über 1.000 Seiten stellt der Historiker Pierre Broué die Ereignisse der revolutionären Periode in Deutschland bis 1923 dar. Dabei stützt er sich auf umfangreiches Originalmaterial, um die Auseinandersetzungen in der Arbeiter*innenbewegung über eine revolutionäre Politik nicht nur wiederzugeben, sondern er unterzieht sie einer Analyse. Dabei verengt er den Blick nicht auf Deutschland, sondern liefert tiefe Einblicke in die Wirkung, die die Russische Revolution auf die Arbeiter*innen in Deutschland hatte und wie die Entwicklungen der Kommunistischen Internationale die Politik der KPD in Deutschland beeinflussten, aber auch, welchen großen Einfluss die revolutionäre Bewegung auf die Geschehnisse in der Sowjetunion hatte. Immer wieder diskutiert der Autor die Entwicklungen und gibt damit einen Ansatzpunkt für Leser*innen, selbst nachzuvollziehen, was warum geschah und sich selbst ein Bild von den Ereignissen zu machen. Broués Werk sollte und wird einen Platz im Regal aller Menschen finden, die sich ernsthaft und tiefgründig mit dem Aufschwung und dem Scheitern der deutschen Revolution in den Jahren 1917 - 23 auseinandersetzen wollen. »Was Broués Buch von anderen unterscheidet ist einmal der unglaubliche Quellenreichtum.
