Mantic elements are manifold in the English drama of the Renaissance period: they are supernatural manifestations and have a prophetic, future-determining function within the dramatic plot, which can be difficult to discern. Addressing contemporaries of Shakespeare, this study interprets a representative number of revenge tragedies, among them The Spanish Tragedy, The White Devil, and The Revenger's Tragedy, to draw general conclusions about the use of mantic elements in this genre. The analysis of the cultural context and the functionalisation of mantic elements in revenge tragedy of the Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Caroline era show their essential function in the construction of the plot. Mantic elements create and stimulate audience expectations. They are not only rhetoric decorum, but structural elements, and convey knowledge about the genre, the fate of which is determined by retaliation. An interpretation of revenge tragedy is only possible if mantic providentialism is taken into account.

Sie wurde zur zentralen Quelle einer reichhaltigen und vielschichtigen Herrschaftsmetaphorik, die sich in allen Stücken Shakespeares aufspüren läßt und in der sich, wie gezeigt wird, ein zutiefst dualistisch geprägtes Herrscherbild manifestiert. Der Fürst ist göttlich und menschlich, ewig und endlich zugleich. Er ist Teil eines hierarchischen und gleichzeitig doch interdependenten Gefüges. Er ist geradezu mystisch verklärt und doch den politischen Realitäten unterworfen. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser ewigen und unlösbaren Spannung zwischen Idealität und Realität entsteht ein vielschichtiges, vielfältiges, ja zum Teil sogar widersprüchliches Herrscherbild, das sich einfachen Erklärungsmustern entzieht und in seiner spannungsvollen Dynamik bis heute fasziniert.

King Alfred the Great (871-99) translated Pope Gregory the Great's Regula pastoralis as part of his programme for the revival of learning in Viking-age England. Three of the surviving six pre-Conquest manuscripts are edited for the first time in substantial parts in this volume; the edition is accompanied by a comprehensive commentary. The introduction presents a survey of the reception and transmission of the Latin and Old English texts and examines the relationship of the Old English manuscripts. Special attention is paid to the linguistic status of Early West Saxon, which is discussed in the light of its historical and political context. A tenth-century revision of the Early West Saxon text in two of the surviving manuscripts is examined in the final chapter.
