Mit Ende des Bürgerkrieges in Rom wurde Octavian der erste Mann im Staat und trug fortan den Ehrennamen Augustus. Nach langjährigen Machtkämpfen konnte er sich als alleiniger Herrscher durchsetzen und so eine neue Epoche des Römischen Reiches einleiten: die Kaiserzeit. Die herausragende Machtstellung des Augustus beruhte auf der Vergabe einzelner Ämter und Befugnisse, Ehrungen und Sonderrechte. Der Ausgangspunkt seiner Herrschaft war die testamentarische Adoption durch seinen Großonkel Gaius Iulius Caesar. Der kinderlose Caesar wollte seine Position und sein Erbe innerhalb der eigenen Familie weitergeben, und Augustus versuchte es ihm gleichzutun. Während er Klientel und Vermögen auf die nächste Generation vererben konnte, waren die politischen Verdienste, seine persönliche Leistung und seine Stellung rechtlich nicht vererbbar. Da Augustus keinen Sohn hatte, versuchte er mit Hilfe von Adoptionen einen Nachfolger zu bestimmen und bemühte sich, durch geschickte Verheiratung seiner Familienmitglieder seine Macht und herausragende Position als Princeps zu festigen und für seinen potentiellen Erben zu sichern. Franziska Knopf analysiert die ausgeklügelte Heiratspolitik innerhalb der "domus Augusta".
