Der Tagungsband „Forschung zwischen Freiheit und Verantwortung“ richtet seinen Fokus auf die historische Dimension der Wissenschaftsethik. Das Streben nach Erkenntnis ist ein Grundelement der conditio humana – der menschlichen Natur. Doch Wissenschaft – die Erkundung neuen Wissens und die Erforschung von Zusammenhängen – ist nicht voraussetzungslos. Sie gelingt vielmehr nur in Selbstbestimmung, und Selbstbestimmung bedeutet immer auch Eigenverantwortung. Der vorliegende Band beschäftigt sich mit ebendieser Dichotomie. Er weist anhand verschiedener historischer und rezenter Beispiele nach, dass „Wissenschaft“ nur dort gedeiht, wo es gelingt, Regeln für gute wissenschaftliche Praxis durchzusetzen und eine „Ethik der (Selbst-)Verantwortung“ zu etablieren. Zudem problematisiert er etwaige externe Kontrollmechanismen.
