Since the beginning of the 1970s, democratic capitalist Western Europe as well as state-socialist Eastern Europe faced the double challenge of the third industrial revolution and the second globalization. The accelerated political, social, economic and cultural change did not lead to a crisis "of capitalism" or "of communism", instead challenging European industrial society as such. In 1989, after a long erosion process, state socialism failed at the task of solving the manifold problems of adjustment; yet a lasting solution is also not conceivable within the context of a neo-liberal "new spirit of capitalism".The present volume, which arose from the interdisciplinary cooperation of historians and social scientists, discusses the consequences of this "great transformation" for the economic elites in both "West" and "East": for their qualification profiles and their social composition, their options and their room for maneuver, their value systems and legitimization strategies, their self-perception and their public image. Economic elites in both systems saw themselves forced to adopt new strategies which very often seem quite different at the surface; looking deeper, they exhibit clear similarities. After 1989, the consolidation of the post-socialist economic elites has, all in all, been completed according to the Western example. The emerging convergences, which are being supported by the process of European integration, contributed to the internationalization of the European economic elites. The volume discusses the problem how strong this tendency was and if it has already created truly transnational economic elites more or less separated from the national context.The contributions, which are embedded into a coherent interpretative framework, are penned by internationally renowned experts and junior researchers from a wide array of countries, from Britain to Poland and from Norway to Portugal. The innovative value of the volume lies in its Europe-wide scope and, above all, in its comparative East-West perspective. A genuinely European community of researchers tackles a topic which is indisputably current for history as well as for the social sciences.

Die Biografie Jürgen Pontos ist die Geschichte eines Aufstiegs vom unbekannten Bankjuristen zum herausragenden Repräsentanten der deutschen Kreditwirtschaft. 1969 zum Vorstandssprecher der Dresdner Bank berufen, wurde Ponto binnen kürzester Zeit zu einem der einflussreichsten Männer der deutschen Wirtschaft. Dabei blieb er stets eine Ausnahmeerscheinung: Der kommunikativ begabte Ponto entsprach weder dem traditionellen Rollenbild eines distinguierten Bankiers noch dem Klischee eines renditefixierten Bankmanagers. Als weltläufiger Sympathieträger an der Spitze der Dresdner Bank verkörperte er geradezu Imagewandel, Modernisierung und Internationalisierung einer traditionsreichen Großbank. Ponto war zugleich eine zentrale Figur in der „Deutschland AG“, der hochgradigen Verflechtung von Banken, Versicherungen und Großindustrie. Er fungierte als prominenter Kritiker wie als respektierter Berater der Politik. Zugleich war der Bankier ein kunstsinniger Bürger, der mit seiner Familie in einem auch künstlerisch geprägten Umfeld lebte und sich in der Kulturförderung engagierte. Pontos exponierte Stellung in der bundesdeutschen Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft ließ ihn im Juli 1977 zum Ziel eines tödlichen Anschlags von Terroristen der RAF werden.

Throughout history the control of land has been the basis of political power. Cadastral maps - cartographic records of property ownership - played an important role in the rise of modern Europe as tools for the consolidation and extension of land-based national power. The Cadastral Map in the Service of the State: A History of Properly Mapping, illustrated with 127 maps, traces the development and application of rural property mapping in Europe and European colonies from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century. The authors go beyond traditional cartographic research, approaching the maps as political instruments rather than as simple geographical or historical tools. The result is an unprecedented examination of the political and economic forces behind the production of maps and advances in cartography, demonstrating how the seemingly neutral science of cartography became a political instrument for national interests. Beginning with a review of the roots of cadastral mapping in the Roman Empire, the authors concentrate on the use of cadastral maps in the Netherlands, France, England, the Nordic countries, the German lands, the territories of the Austrian Habsburgs, and the European colonies. During the seventeenth century, governments began to use maps to secure economic and political bases; by the nineteenth century, these maps had become tools for aggressive governmental control of land as tax bases, natural resources, and national territories. The culmination of extensive bibliographic and archival research made possible by the authors' considerable linguistic skills, this work draws from source materials in ten languages and spanning five centuries. It will remain thedefinitive source on the subject for years to come. The Cadastral Map in the Service of the State was awarded the 1991 Kenneth Nebenzahl Prize for the best new manuscript in the history of cartography.
