Oder sollte man besser sagen: Welche Empfehlungen gab Luther seinen christlichen Zeitgenossen? Aber da drängt sich doch die Frage auf, ob Luthers Ratschläge und Äußerungen auch Bedeutung für die Christen der Gegenwart haben. Luther hat mit seiner Idee der evangelischen Kirche, die ihre Legitimation und Lehre direkt von der heiligen Schrift ableitet, nicht nur seine Zeit beeinflusst, sondern es begann auch eine neue Ära der Kirchengeschichte. Die Auswirkungen der Reformation sind noch heute, im Jahr 2007, präsent und Luther in den Lehrplänen der Schulen verankert. Da verdient die Frage doch Beachtung, ob die Theologie Luthers einen ähnlichen Ewigkeitsanspruch beanspruchen kann oder Luther allenfalls als historischer Figur eine Art Ehrenplatz ohne Bedeutung für die Gegenwart einzuräumen ist. Das Thema dieser Arbeit dreht sich um die politische Ethik Martin Luthers, die er erstmals in seinem Werk Von weltlicher Obrigkeit, wie weit man ihr Gehorsam schuldig sei von 1523 umriss. Was veranlasste Luther als Seelsorger und Prediger, sich mit weltlichem Gehorsam auseinanderzusetzen? Thematisierte er Probleme, die wir heute auch ohne die Kenntnis über die Sozialgeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit verstehen? Gibt Luther Handlungsanweisungen an den Christen allgemein, in welchem Jahrhundert er sich auch befinden möge? Diese Arbeit ist in drei Themenblöcke gegliedert, die dem Leser Luthers Vorstellungen vom Leben unter weltlichem Gesetz und seiner Ordnung nahe bringen will. Zunächst einmal wird im ersten Block eine Übersicht über die Quelle dieser Arbeit gegeben, die oben schon erwähnte Schrift „Von weltlicher Obrigkeit, wie weit ihr Gehorsam schuldig sei“. Die zwei zentralen Punkte, die das christliche Alltagsleben berühren und die Luther hier anspricht, sind seine Unterscheidung von den zwei Reichen und Regimenten Gottes sowie das Widerstandrecht eines Christen gegen die Obrigkeit. Es sei darauf hingewiesen, dass sich diese Arbeit nicht mit dem dritten Hauptaspekt der Schrift auseinandersetzen wird, da er thematisch zu weit abseits des Schwerpunktes liegt. Der dritte Hauptaspekt handelt vom christlichen Handeln eines Fürsten. Ferner wird in dem ersten Themenblock die Frage betrachtet werden, ob Luthers Ideen als dogmatische Lehre zu verstehen sind oder eher als situationsbezogene Ratschläge.

Over the past twenty years the transition from the late Middle Ages to the early modern era has received increasing attention from experts in the history of philosophy. In part, this new interest arises from claims, made in literature aimed at a less specialist readership, that this transition was responsible for the subsequent philosophical and theological problems of the Enlightenment. Philosophers like Alasdair MacIntyre and theologians like John Milbank display a certain nostalgia for the medieval synthesis of Thomas Aquinas and, consequently, evaluate the period from 1300 to 1700 in rather negative terms. Other historians of philosophy writing for the general public, such as Charles Taylor, take a more positive view of the Reformation but nevertheless conclude that modernity has been shaped by 1 conflicts which stem from early modern times. Ethics and moral thought occupy a central place in these theories. It is assumed that we have lost something – the concept of virtue, for instance, or the source of common morality. Yet those who put forward such notions do not treat the history of ethics in detail. From the historian’s perspective, their far-reaching theoretical assumptions are based on a quite small body of textual evidence. In reality, there was a rich variety of approaches to moral thinking and ethical theories during the period from 1400 to 1600.
