Weltweit warnen Wissenschaftler vor den Folgen der Erderwärmung und Politiker diskutieren über Möglichkeiten den fortschreitenden Klimawandel zu verringern. Auch wird in den Medien vermehrt über das Thema ‚Global Warming‘ berichtet und so der breiten Masse die Gefahren diesen Phänomens deutlich gemacht. Inzwischen scheint es bewiesen, dass die stetig steigende Klimaerwärmung, die seit Beginn der Industrialisierung immer schneller voran geschritten ist, vor allem anthropogene Ursachen hat und insbesondere auf den vom Menschen verursachten Anstieg der Treibhausgase zurückzuführen ist. Auch in Europa sind die Auswirkungen der Klimaänderung auf die physikalischen und biologischen Systeme nicht mehr zu leugnen und in allen Lebensbereichen deutlich erkennbar. Um mit diesen Folgen fertig werden und entsprechende Anpassungsmaßnahmen und Strategien planen zu können bedarf es einer möglichst genauen Analyse der anzunehmenden Auswirkungen. Dabei ist jedoch zu berücksichtigen, dass Aussagen über die Klimafolgen mit den unterschiedlichsten Unsicherheitsfaktoren in Bezug auf u.a. Ursachenzuweisung, zukünftige Entwicklung und Probleme bei der Klimamodellierung behaftet sind. Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt im zweiten Kapitel kurz die wichtigsten, für Europa relevanten, physiogeographischen und klimatologischen Grundtatsachen vor. Im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit stehen die darauf folgenden Kapitel drei und vier. Sie beinhalten eine Zusammenschau über die diversen Erkenntnisse über die bereits bestehenden bzw. zu erwartenden Auswirkungen des Klimawandels in Europa. Dabei stehen insbesondere hygrische und thermische und Folgen im Mittelpunkt, wobei ebenfalls ökologische, sozioökonomische und wirtschaftliche Folgewirkungen thematisiert werden. Es gilt zu beachten, dass die gesamten Auswirkungen, die im Rahmen dieser Arbeit nicht alle behandelt werden können, ein komplexes Gebilde und deshalb nicht strikt voneinander zu trennen sind.

Nothing affects the modern economy (and society) more than decisions made in the market place, especially, but not only, decisions made by consumers. Although it is not startling to suggest that decisions made in production are affected by choices consumers make, consumers have long been viewed, not only by academic economists, as individual, isolated rational actors that make or refrain from purchases purely on the basis of narrow financial considerations. Markets are not and never were morally neutral. Market relations have always had an often taken-for-granted moral underpinning. The moralization of the markets refers to the dissolution and replacement of the conventional moral underpinnings of market conduct, for example, in the music market, financial markets, and corporate governance. It further implies not only the heightened importance of new ethical precepts, but the significant change in the role of moral ideals in market behavior. These profound transformations of economic conduct are accompanied and co-determined by societal conflicts. The moralization of markets represents thus a new stage in the social evolution of markets. The book is divided into four parts, in which the twelve chapters, written by contributors from different social science disciplines, deal with the context of the moralization of the markets; the major social institutions; and present case studies that examine European and American attitudes and behavior towards tobacco and GMO; expansion of the private and ethics in business; and how workers respond to the new corporate norms. The development of EU enlargement has raised many thorny issues unanticipated by the framers of the EC Treaty. A significant upshot of these issues is that the concept of European identity – defined in terms of such factors as culture, history and economics – has supplanted the long-dominant theme of ‘widening and deepening,’ particularly since the Union’s expansion has become primarily eastward. The major contribution of this important book lies in its analysis of the conceptualization and perception of enlargement from various points of view, focusing on the concerns of stakeholders and the ‘identity’ conflicts and uncertainties incurred by enlargement initiatives. In the course of its presentation, it details the actual pre-accession Europeanization process and its complex history. Among the key elements discussed are the following: the conflict between ‘widening’ and ‘deepening’ and the effect on EU institutional reform; institutional requirements on candidate countries; pre-accession criteria and negotiations; administrative capacity, judicial capacity, and legal approximation in accession states; capacity of the EU to absorb new Member States; and EC law as part of European identity.
