The objective is to assist human rights education efforts worldwide. The book's thematic modules on selected human rights issues cover topics such as: the prohibition of torture, freedom from poverty, human rights of women and children, human rights in armed conflict, freedom of expression, and democracy. New to this updated edition are chapters reflecting current trends in human rights, including new modules on privacy (such as challenges posed by Internet use), minority rights, and the right to asylum. Translations of the earlier editions already exist in 15 languages, among them all the official United Nations languages. Understanding Human Rights has become a basic text for human rights education and training in different countries, on different levels, and for different audiences, from university lectures in China to NGO training in Mali to police training in Kosovo.

This book deals with the rules that are in force in Europe for juvenile offenders. The aim of the rules is to uphold the rights and safety of juvenile offenders subject to sanctions or measures and to promote their physical, mental and social well-being when subject to community sanctions or measures, or any form of deprivation of liberty. It is based on Recommendation Rec(2008)11 of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on the European Rules for juvenile offenders subject to sanctions or measures, which was adopted on 5 November 2008. The first part of the book contains the text of the recommendation and is followed by a commentary which explains in finer detail the rules and the points raised by the text. The final section provides an analysis of the national replies to a questionnaire related to the treatment of juvenile offenders. This work will be of interest to human rights scholars, researchers and students of law, criminology and international relations.

Enlargement Of The European Union written by Allan F. Tatham and has been published by Kluwer Law International B.V. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-26 with Law categories.

The development of EU enlargement has raised many thorny issues unanticipated by the framers of the EC Treaty. A significant upshot of these issues is that the concept of European identity – defined in terms of such factors as culture, history and economics – has supplanted the long-dominant theme of ‘widening and deepening,’ particularly since the Union’s expansion has become primarily eastward. The major contribution of this important book lies in its analysis of the conceptualization and perception of enlargement from various points of view, focusing on the concerns of stakeholders and the ‘identity’ conflicts and uncertainties incurred by enlargement initiatives. In the course of its presentation, it details the actual pre-accession Europeanization process and its complex history. Among the key elements discussed are the following: the conflict between ‘widening’ and ‘deepening’ and the effect on EU institutional reform; institutional requirements on candidate countries; pre-accession criteria and negotiations; administrative capacity, judicial capacity, and legal approximation in accession states; capacity of the EU to absorb new Member States; and EC law as part of European identity. Also covered are specific historical details of particular pre-accession negotiations (e.g., Greece, Spain, Portugal, Malta, and Cyprus), the still inconclusive negotiations with Turkey and the Western Balkan states, and political factors involved in the non-accession of Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. Assembling powerful evidence and applying incisive analysis, the author’s conclusion shows that, absent further (and major) EU institutional reform, it will be difficult for an enlarging Union to continue to ‘deliver the goods.’ A watershed in the continuing great debate on the fulfilment of the EC Treaty’s determination to foster and promote ‘an ever closer union of the peoples of Europe,’ this book will prove invaluable to anybody interested in the European integration project, particularly lawyers, academics, officials and policymakers in the EU Member States.

HRH Princess Margriet of the Netherlands has made her mark in the annals of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. In this anthology prominent members of the world community and global experts and practitioners come together to pay tribute to Princess Margriet for her decades of dedicated service to the Movement and the Netherlands Red Cross Society. This tribute takes place on the occasion of the end of her eight-year tenure as Chair of the Standing Commission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. Under the Princess’s guidance, the Standing Commission has come to play a strong and unifying role in the Movement. This unique collection of scholarly and inspirational essays offers a wealth of information on the constituent components and statutory bodies of the Movement and contemplates its mission to help victims and improve the lives of vulnerable people. It addresses the humanitarian concerns and challenges of our time. The anthology further provides a unique forum for the current debates on the application and development of international humanitarian law. It also discusses the Movement’s relations with governments and external partners and the contribution of volunteers. This is the first book to bring the relatively unknown Standing Commission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent and its work prominently to the fore. Making the Voice of Humanity Heard is essential and accessible reading for anyone interested in the daunting tasks and fundamental role of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement as well as the contemporary threats and challenges to humanitarian assistance and international humanitarian law.
