On February 24-25, 1956, in a closed session of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Nikita S. Khrushchev made his now famous speech on the crimes of the Stalin era. That speech marked a break with the past and it marked the end of what J.M. Bochenski dubbed the "dead period" of Soviet philosophy. Soviet philosophy changed abruptly after 1956, especially in the area of dialectical materialism. Yet most philosophers in the West neither noticed nor cared. For them, the resurrection of Soviet philosophy, even if believable, was of little interest. The reasons for the lack of belief and interest were multiple. Soviet philosophy had been dull for so long that subtle differences made little difference. The Cold War was in a frigid period and reinforced the attitude of avoiding anything Soviet. Phenomenology and exis tentialism were booming in Europe and analytic philosophy was king on the Anglo-American philosophical scene. Moreover, not many philosophers in the West knew or could read Russian or were motivated to learn it to be able to read Soviet philosophical works. The launching of Sputnik awakened the West from its self complacent slumbers. Academic interest in the Soviet Union grew.

Kann "Gott" Thema einer vernünftigen, undogmatischen Philosophie sein? Wenn ja, in welcher Weise? Über eine systematische Rekonstruktion des philosophischen Werkes von Simon L. Frank (1877–1950) werden diese Fragen erörtert. Der erkenntnismetaphysische Grundansatz Franks vereinigt Transzendentalphilosophie und Phänomenologie. Er führt zu einer "Fundamentalontologie", die durch ihre immanente Verbindung zur Anthropologie wesentlich personale Ontologie ist. Der Überschritt zur philosophischen Theologie wird anhand des Begriffes "religiöser Erfahrung" herausgearbeitet. Wissenschaftlichkeit sowie philosophische und religiöse Adäquatheit dieses Unterfangens werden überprüft. Dabei wird sowohl dem Verdacht auf "Ontotheologie" als auch dem Vorwurf des "Pantheismus" kritisch nachgegangen.

Die vorgelegte Forschungsarbeit vollzieht die Betrachtung eines der wichtigsten Probleme der postkantschen Metaphysik – des Problems der Begründung ihrer Möglichkeit – vom interkul-turellen Ansatz her. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass sich das Verlangen nach Metaphysik außerhalb des neuscholastischen Raumes, zu dessen Anhängern sich Emerich Coreth (1919–2006) erklärte, in der »russischen religiösen Philosophie« vollzieht, die zu den Höchstleistungen des russischen philosophischen Denkens des 20. Jahrhunderts gehört und deren bedeutendster Vertreter Simon L. Frank (1877–1950) ist. Die durchgeführte Analyse hilft, die Besonderheit der Entwicklung der christlichen Metaphysik im 20. Jahrhundert zu begreifen, welche sich vom Druck der Kant’schen Kritik befreite, den Weg zum Sein eröffnete und dadurch die Möglichkeit des philosophischen Gedankens eines religiösen Typus begründete.

"There are many reasons for writing a biography of Semyon Frank. Quite apart from his philosophy, he lived a remarkable life. Born in Moscow in 1877, he was exiled from Soviet Russia in 1922 and died in London in 1950. The son of a Jewish doctor, he became a revolutionary Social Democrat in his teens and finished his life as a Neoplatonist Christian. One of the Russian revisionist Marxists, he was then involved in the Kadet Party during the 1905 revolution before breaking with active political activity and turning to philosophy. He lived in Petrograd through the First World War until September 1917, after which he went to Saratov, where he experienced the chaos of the Russian Civil War. Living in Germany after his exile, he witnessed the rise of Hitler in Berlin, left for France in a hurry in 1937, and spent part of the war hiding from the Gestapo in the Grenoble mountains. It was a life that encompassed a lot of history. "Yet along with this, Frank was arguably Russia's greatest twentieth-century philosopher. Indeed, V.V. Zen'kovskii, the historian of Russian philosophy, considered Frank 'in strength of philosophic vision ... the most outstanding among Russian philosophers generally - not merely among those who share his ideas.' For its lucidity, conciseness, systematic character, and unity, Zen'kovskii considered Frank's system ' the highest achievement ... of Russian philosophy.' Doubtless, Zen'kovskii's assessment is disputable, but his remarks emphasize Frank's stature in the Russian tradition. In the style of German idealism, Frank constructed a comprehensive philosophical system, which he believed offered a coherent alternative to materialism. He was deeply worried by the implications of epistemological relativism and constructed a system of metaphysics designed to link epistemology and ontology, to bridge the gulf between thought and being. In addition, he attempted to express the idea of a personal God in philosophical language. His system also embraced social philosophy, anthropology, and ethics." - from the Introduction by the author

In der Kirche, dem Ort der religiösen Praxis, fragt der Gläubige insbesondere im Gottesdienst nach Gott, um durch die Begegnung und Erfahrung einer Transzendenz, die Gott ist, innerlich und äußerlich verändert zu werden. Auch an der Universität, dem Ort der Wissenschaft, wird die Gottesfrage sowohl in der Theologie als auch in der Philosophie gestellt. Die Theologie spricht auf einer wissenschaftlichen Basis über Gott, Gott ist in der theologischen Rede Objekt und Subjekt zugleich. Damit versucht sie Kirchlichkeit und Wissenschaftlichkeit zu verbinden. Die Frage nach Gott ist hierbei das unumstrittene Zentrum der Theologie, für sie steht es außer Zweifel, dass Gott existiert und er von sich her sich offenbart und erfahrbar ist, dieses wird von ihr sogar vorausgesetzt. Demgegenüber spricht auch die Philosophie über Gott. In der Philosophie hingegen, gibt es jedoch viele verschiedenen Antworten auf die Frage nach Gott und auch die Frage wird von jedem Philosoph neu formuliert und in einen anderen Kontext gesetzt. Die Gottesfrage wandelt sich so mit der sich verändernden Geschichte der Philosophie. Im Gegensatz zur Theologie versucht die Philosophie zudem vor allem hinsichtlich der Vernunft zu beweisen, ob Gott existiert oder nicht. Sie lehnt die Religion und damit auch die Theologie nicht ab, sondern sie möchte über beide Disziplinen wissenschaftlich diskutieren und die daraus entstehenden Schlussfolgerungen logisch in Bezug auf die Vernunft begründen.
