although Hans Urs von Balthasar’s earliest publication is from 1925, and although he was a mature forty years old in 1945, there is a deficiency in the secondary literature regarding his early literature, its historical backgrounds and non-theological sources. In this study Balthasar is presented in relation to the various contexts in which he was both drawing upon and responding to from the 1920s to the 1940s. The major contexts analyzed here are the broad central European Germanophone cultural context, the Germanophone Catholic cultural context, the German studies context, the French Catholic renewal literature and theology of the early 20th-century, the popular journal Stimmen der Zeit, Neo-Scholasticism, early 20th-century French Catholic culture, Swiss fascism, National Socialist literature, the Renouveau Catholique, the George-Kreis and many others. Balthasar’s early anti-Semitism and some of the problematic aspects of his early work are also addressed in this study. His understanding of the modern age, his relationships with some key intellectual figures and his later reflections on his early work are also introduced. The book offers a comprehensive study of Balthasar’s early intellectual development.

Carl Joachim Friedrich wurde bei dieser Analyse - obwohl ihr gelegentlich ein behaviori stisches bias nachgesagt wurde - von einem grossen Prozentsatz der inter viewten Politikwissenschaftler sehr hiiufig zu den bedeutendsten Gelehrten seines Faches geziihlt. Einmalig war die Dauer der wissenschaftlichen Hoch schiitzung, die er in einer Zeit einer immer kurzlebiger werdenden wissen schaftlichen Reputation genoss. Friedrich war neben Lasswell einer der wenigen, die sowohl vor 1945 als auch nach 1945 unter den 15 bedeutendsten 1 Politikwissenschaftlern genannt wurden. Es wird schwer sein, unter den fiinf Voraussetzungen wissenschaftlicher Reputation einen einzelnen Grund ffir die Bedeutung C.J. Friedrichs herauszustellen. Neue Ideen entwickelte Friedrich - so umstritten manche (vor allem in der Totalitarismusforschung) gewesen sein mogen - besonders in der Erfor schung des Konstitutionalismus, des Foderalismus und des Totalitarismus. Seine bekanntesten Beitriige zur Systematisierung der Forschungsergebnisse sind die Werke "Constitutional Government and Democracy" (1937 if.) und "Man and His Government" (1963).

The Western tradition of excluding women from leadership and disparaging their ability to lead has persisted for centuries, not least in Germany. Even today, resistance to women holding power is embedded in literary, cultural, and historical values that presume a fundamental opposition between the adjective "female" and the substantive "leader." Women who do achieve positions of leadership are faced with a panoply of prejudicial misconceptions: either considered incapable of leadership (conceived of as alpha-male behavior), or pigeonholed as suited only to particular forms of leadership (nurturing, cooperative, egalitarian, communicative, etc.). Focusing on the German-speaking countries, this volume works to dismantle the prevailing disassociation of women and leadership across a range of disciplines.
