The past fifty years have seen far-reaching changes in Palestinian society in the West Bank. The Israeli occupation which began in 1967, the political mobilization of the 1970s and 1980s, and the so-called peace process in the 1990s went together with deep social transformations, which not only changed the dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but also altered the figurations and conflict lines between different social groups within Palestinian society. This book is a sociological study of these transformation processes, based on a combination of Norbert Elias’ figurational sociology, social-constructivist biographical research, and Karl Mannheim’s sociology of knowledge and generational sociology. In addition to conflicts and tensions between inhabitants of the old refugee camps and the (new) urban middle class in the West Bank, the author focuses in particular on a latent Palestinian generational conflict: it is clear that members of the ‘Oslo Generation’ – meaning those who grew up during the Oslo peace process in the 1990s – have fewer power and life chances, and in particular fewer opportunities for meaning, than their predecessors in the generation of fighters and activists of the 1970s and 1980s.

How do people narrate events in their life story and in the history of their family or families when making a self-presentation? How are narratives and experiences in the present related to experiences and narratives in the past? This book answers these questions with a theoretical and empirical study of the interconnections between remembering, experiencing, and presenting what was experienced, at different points of the life course and of the associated collective histories. It also discusses rules for conducting interviews that support processes of remembering, and for carrying out an analysis that does justice to this dialectic. The author exploits ideas from phenomenology and Gestalt theory in this book, which has become a classic. Since its first publication in 1995, she has increasingly taken inspiration from the figurational sociology of Norbert Elias. Accordingly, this English edition contains a new introduction and a new chapter on this later expansion of her approach to sociological biographical research.

Staatliche Zerfallsprozesse zerstören nicht nur die soziokulturellen, wirtschaftlichen und politischen Grundlagen der jeweiligen Bevölkerung, sondern stellen auch eine neue Herausforderung für die internationale Gemeinschaft dar. Welche internen und externen Ursachen liegen dem Verfall von Staatlichkeit zugrunde? Und welche Dimensionen umfasst dieser Prozess? Diesen Fragen wird anhand von Fallbeispielen aus verschiedenen Kontinenten nachgegangen. Mit der Kategorie der „Proto“-Staaten wird zudem dem Umstand Rechung getragen, dass scheiternde Staatlichkeit nicht nur die Folge des Zerfalls bestehender Staatsgebilde, sondern auch missglückter Staatsbildung sein kann.
