Nach der politischen Wende von 1989/90 stand die traditionsreiche Kirche der Siebenbürger Sachsen vor einer ihrer größten Herausforderungen: Der größte Teil ihrer Mitglieder entschied sich für die Auswanderung nach Deutschland, zurück blieben weiter schrumpfende Restgemeinden. Hatte die Kirche während der Zeit der kommunistischen Herrschaft nicht nur religiöse, sondern auch kulturelle und sprachliche Heimat geboten, musste sie anders als zuvor während der schleichenden Abwanderung nun motivierende Antworten auf Fragen nach ihrer Legimitation und Zukunftsfähigkeit finden. Christoph Klein trat sein Bischofsamt kurz nach der Wende an und lenkte die Kirche rund zwei Jahrzehnte aus der Ratlosigkeit heraus beständig in Richtung Zuversicht und Konsolidierung und moderierte die Umorientierung. Während dieser Zeit visitierte er nach altem Brauch alle noch bestehenden Gemeinden und Einrichtungen, so dass seine Berichte – ergänzt durch weitere Unterlagen – eine einzigartige Quelle über den möglicherweise größten Wandel dieser Kirche seit der Reformation darstellen.

Das vorliegende Buch widmet sich der Geschichte, dem gesellschaftlichen Leben und dem Brauchtum der evangelischen Gemeinde des kleinen siebenbürgischen Dorfes Schaal. Darüber hinaus wurde auch ein Ortsfamilienbuch der Gemeinde erstellt. Die Kirchenmatrikel von 1669 bis 1994 bildeten zusammen mit einer Vielzahl weiterer Quellen die Grundlage für die Rekonstruktion der Familien. Der Familienliste wurde eine erste Auswertung der erfassten Daten hinsichtlich demographischer und sozialer Aspekte vorangestellt. Anhand der vorliegenden Daten ist es nun möglich, nicht nur die weitverzweigten Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen der Siebenbürger Sachsen in Schaal zu dokumentieren, sondern auch individuelle Stammbäume zu erstellen, die bis in das 17. Jh. zurückreichen. Auch viele Nachkommen ausgewanderter Schaaler Gemeindeglieder finden sich in diesem Buch wieder.

In Enlightenment Underground, Mulsow shows that even in the late seventeenth century some thinkers in Germany ventured to express extremely dangerous ideas, but did so as part of a secret underground. Scouring manuscript collections across northern Europe, Mulsow studied the writings of countless hitherto unknown radical jurists, theologians, historians, and dissident students who pushed for the secularization of legal, political, social, and religious knowledge. Often their works circulated in manuscript, anonymously, or as clandestinely published books. Working as a philosophical microhistorian, Mulsow has discovered the identities of several covert radicals and linked them to circles of young German scholars, many of whom were connected with the vibrant radical cultures of the Netherlands, England, and Denmark. The author reveals how radical ideas and contributions to intellectual doubt came from Socinians and Jews, church historians and biblical scholars, political theorists, and unemployed university students. He shows that misreadings of humorous or ironic works sometimes gave rise to unintended skeptical thoughts or corrosively political interpretations of Christianity. Collected Studies CS1071 The central figure in this volume is that of Gratian, whose monumental compilation of canon law sparked off the revival of legal studies in the medieval West. In other collections of essays, Stephan Kuttner dealt with the development of canon law in the two centuries that followed the publication of Gratian's Decretum, and the ideas that this engendered; here he is concerned with the foundations upon which all these later efforts were based. The work of Gratian is, of course, the principal focus, but the studies then follow the spread of the teaching of law, from its inception at Bologna in the 1140s to its appearance soon after in other centres of learning in the West especially in France, in the Anglo-Norman schools and in Germany. With a quarter of the volume consisting of additional notes and extensive indexes, it makes a contribution of the greatest importance to the historical study of canon law. This book is an investigative study of Christian and Islamic relations in the kingdom of Sicily during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. It has three objectives. First, it establishes how and why the Norman rulers of Sicily, all of whom were Christians, incorporated Muslim soldiers, farmers, scholars, and bureaucrats into the formation of their own royal identities and came to depend on their Muslim subjects to project and enforce their political power. Second, it examines how the Islamic influence within the Sicilian court drew little scrutiny, and even less criticism, from intellectuals in the wider world of Latin Christendom during the time period. Finally, it contextualizes and explains the eventual emergence of Christian popular violence against Muslims in Sicily in the latter half of the twelfth century and the evolution of a wider discourse of anti-Islamic sentiment throughout Western Europe.
