Welche Bedeutung haben digitale Medien für die Geschichte, wie entsteht eine digitale Geschichte? Wie funktioniert Forschen und Schreiben unter veränderten Bedingungen, wie die demokratische Auseinandersetzung um die Erinnerungskultur? Diesen zentralen Fragen einer digitalen Geschichtswissenschaft wird in dieser Studie anhand des paradigmatischen Visual History Archives (VHA) nachgegangen. Im VHA sind mehr als 49.000 digitale Zeugnisse Überlebender der Shoah gespeichert. Diese Studie analysiert zunächst die Quellengattung des Zeugnisses, die spezifischen Bedingungen der Zeugnisse im VHA, bevor ein theoretischer Rahmen für das Verstehen dieses digital turns, mit dem an Hannah Arendt und Homi Bhabha angelehnten Entwurf eines virtuellen Zwischenraums der Erinnerung formuliert wird. Die theoretischen Annahmen werden abschließend in drei Fallstudien zur Forschung, Darstellung und Rezeption geprüft. Ergebnis dieser Studie ist eine konzise Quellenkritik digitaler Zeugnisse, ihr Dispositiv.

As a result of rapid advancements in computer science during recent decades, there has been an increased use of digital tools, methodologies and sources in the field of digital humanities. While opening up new opportunities for scholarship, many digital methods and tools now used for humanities research have nevertheless been developed by computer or data sciences and thus require a critical understanding of their mode of operation and functionality. The novel field of digital hermeneutics is meant to provide such a critical and reflexive frame for digital humanities research by acquiring digital literacy and skills. A new knowledge for the assessment of digital data, research infrastructures, analytical tools, and interpretative methods is needed, providing the humanities scholar with the necessary munition for doing critical research. The Doctoral Training Unit "Digital History and Hermeneutics" at the University of Luxembourg applies this analytical frame to 13 PhD projects. By combining a hermeneutic reflection on the new digital practices of humanities scholarship with hands-on experimentation with digital tools and methods, new approaches and opportunities as well as limitations and flaws can be addressed.

This book is the first to bring together analyses of the full range of post-war testimony given by survivors of the Sonderkommando of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The Auschwitz Sonderkommando were slave labourers in the gas chambers and crematoria, forced to process and dispose of the bodies of those who were murdered. They have been central to a number of key topics in post-war debates about the Shoah: collaboration, moral compromise and survival, resistance, representation, and the possibility of bearing witness. Their testimony however has mostly met with a reluctance to engage in depth with it. Moving from testimonies produced within the event, the Scrolls of Auschwitz and the Sonderkommando photographs, to testimonies given at trials and for video archives, and to the paintings of David Olère and the film Shoah by Claude Lanzmann, this book demonstrates the importance of their witnessing in the post-war memory of the Holocaust, and provides vital new insights into the questions of representation, memory, gender, and the Shoah.

Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das östliche Europa unter der nationalsozialistischen Besatzung neu erfasst, vermessen und geplant. Der Band stellt aktuelle Ergebnisse aus der Raum-, Städtebau- und Architekturforschung zu den Akteuren, Praktiken und Techniken vor. Er fragt insbesondere nach der ‚Messbarkeit‘ des NS-Besatzungsregimes und nach den Möglichkeiten der Dokumentation und Präsentation mithilfe digitaler Analysemethoden. Damit wird der bestehende Kenntnisstand nicht nur in qualitativer Hinsicht erweitert; die Untersuchung quantitativer Merkmale, die durch rechnergestützte Verfahren erfasst werden, führt darüber hinaus zu weitergehenden, belastbaren Aussagen. Aus einer architekturgeschichtlichen Perspektive wird untersucht, inwiefern die Digital Humanities innovatives methodisches Potential bieten, um die okkupatorischen Ziele und Praktiken des nationalsozialistischen Regimes im östlichen Europa neu auszuloten.
