Mai 1935 der Teilabschnitt der Autobahn zwischen Frankfurt und Darmstadt fertiggestellt wurde, ließ sich der „Führer“ des deutschen Volkes, Adolf Hitler, als Erfinder der kilometerlangen Betonbänder feiern. Die Propagandamaschinerie der Nationalsozialisten hatte es verstanden, die Visionen der Massenmotorisierung mit dem Autobahnbau zu verbinden. Die Idee von kreuzungsfreien, schnellen Straßen stammte allerdings vielmehr aus Zeiten der Weimarer Republik wie auch dem Italien der frühen zwanziger Jahre. Bereits nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg hatten sich in Deutschland Anhänger des Automobils, Wirtschaftsverbände und Kommunen für den Bau von Autobahnen stark gemacht. Während diese Bestrebungen sehr begrenzt erfolgreich waren und zumeist am politischen Widerstand scheiterten, nutzten die Nationalsozialisten Autobahnen als Prestigeprojekt schlechthin. Die reelle Massenmotorisierung hinkte den hochgesteckten Verlautbarungen weitestgehend hinterher. Umso wichtiger war die visuelle Wirkung von riesigen asphaltierten Strecken in der deutschen Landschaft, die von Arbeitern im Zuge von Beschaffungsmaßnahmen errichtet wurden.

The expressway network in Europe developed into an essential infrastructure of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century and provided means of commuting, as well as accommodated leisure travel and the cargo supply for the mass consumption society. This book discusses, how expressways were developed in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. It focuses on the various forerunner projects and the role of the Hafraba association, which has been significant in the Hessian region, with its actors in Kassel, Frankfurt and Darmstadt. It is shown, how the Autobahn concept developed, from the Italian expressways to the Bonn-Cologne Autobahn and to the design of the Nazi Autobahn project. The Bonn-Cologne Autobahn was the first Autobahn in Germany, opened in 1932 by Konrad Adenauer, later Chancellor of West-Germany. This Autobahn section is here explored for the first time. As part of the Nazi Mega Project various regional legs are explored and for the first time drawn to scholary attention: The leg Frankfurt-Kassel-Göttingen, the leg Frankfurt-Darmstadt-Heidelberg-Karlsruhe and the leg Munich-Salzburg. The goals of the Nazi mega project are evaluated. Further the book shows, how traffic on the Autobahn developed and which experiences were made by driving on the Autobahn. The book discusses various approaches towards a theory on infrastructure.

Das bayerische Alpenvorland ist seit rund 200 Jahren Sehnsuchtsort und -region für Menschen aus aller Welt. Die Touristen fanden dort u. a. Berge und Seen, Tradition und Brauchtum, Natur und Landschaft, zunächst im Sommer, dann auch im Winter. Die in der vorliegenden Studie untersuchten Orte Berchtesgaden, Oberstaufen und Schliersee zählen seit dem 19. Jahrhundert zu den beliebtesten Tourismusdestinationen Bayerns. Dabei waren die Orte einem ständigen Veränderungs- und Anpassungsprozess unterworfen. Rasch wurden die wirtschaftlichen Möglichkeiten erkannt, die sich den ländlich geprägten Orten mit den Touristen boten. Gleichzeitig eröffnete sich ein Spannungsfeld zwischen dem Eingehen auf die Wünsche und Erwartungen der Touristen einerseits und der Bewahrung der eigenen Identitäten andererseits. Der Tourismus veränderte die Orte zum Teil grundlegend: Landwirte sattelten um und wurden zu Gastronomen und Hoteliers, auf für die Landwirtschaft unattraktiven Flächen wurden Villen und Unterkünfte für die Sommerfrischler errichtet, das Geld der Touristen ermöglichte den Bau verschiedenster Infrastruktureinrichtungen, die sowohl den Einheimischen wie auch den Gästen zugute kamen. Der Autor untersucht die Entwicklung des Tourismus im Raum Südbayern während der krisenhaften ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Auf Grundlage einer breiten Quellenbasis werden Akteure beider Seiten, also von Reisenden wie Bereisten, ebenso in den Blick genommen wie Infrastrukturen, Strukturwandel, Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Beteiligten und politische Entscheidungen.
