Von ihr selbst erzählt erstmals 1906 in kleiner Auflage in Wien bei dem ungenannten Erotika-Verleger Fritz Freund auf Subskriptionsbasis erschienen, um die damalige Zensur zu umgehen.Dieser Roman gilt seit seinem Erscheinen als ein Meisterstück erotischer Literatur, fand aber erst in den 1970er Jahren nach seiner Verfilmung in Deutschland größere Verbreitung. Der Autor des Romans ist unbekannt, das Buch wird aber dem österreichisch-ungarischen Schriftsteller Felix Salten (Bambi) zugeschrieben. Es war der Satiriker Karl Kraus, der die provozierende Bemerkung zur Urheberschaft Felix Saltens in die Welt setzte, Salten selbst hat sich zu der Behauptung nie geäußert.In dem Werk erzählt die Protagonistin, die gealterte Prostituierte Mutzenbacher, aus ihrer Kindheit. Josefine erzählt, wie ein Bettgeher sie als Fünfjährige auf den Schoß nimmt und ihr das Röckchen aufhebt, beschreibt weiter, wie sie von anderen Kindern bei diversen Vater und Mutter"-Spielchen aufgeklärt wird und was die Nachbarin am Dachboden so treibt. Am Ende des Buchs ist Josefine dann etwa vierzehn Jahre alt und sammelt ihre ersten Erfahrungen als Prostituierte. Josefine macht ihre Erfahrungen teilweise frei von Zwang und Gewalt und deckt die Scheinmoral der Gesellschaft auf; nach Ansicht von Kritikern verleiht die anreißerische, kein Detail auslassende Darstellung der geschilderten Erlebnisse dem Werk allerdings den Charakter von Kinderpornografie.www.victorian-erotica.org
