Jede Kultur erbringt spezielle Leistungen. Die griechische glänzte durch Kunst, Wissenschaft und Philosophie, die römische durch Politik, Recht und Bautechnik. Der Beitrag des kleinen Juda und Jerusalems für die Weltkultur war der Monotheismus, der Glaube an den einen Gott. Eine frühere Form des Monotheismus, die des Echnaton, blieb Episode. Der jüdische Monotheismus hingegen ist vom Christentum und vor allem vom Islam übernommen und so ein Element der Weltgeschichte geworden. Seit zwei Jahrhunderten gelten diese Religionen vielen als besonders aggressiv und den Frieden gefährdend. Othmar Keel rekonstruiert Schritt für Schritt die stufenweise Entstehung des Monotheismus im Rahmen der Geschichte Jerusalems im 1. Jtd. v.Chr. Er legt dar, auf welche Einflüsse aggressive und intolerante Züge zurückzuführen sind, und mit welchen Argumentationsfiguren man sie schon damals einzudämmen und zu überwinden versuchte. Unter Berücksichtigung der internationalen Forschung, besonders der israelischen, angloamerikanischen und deutschsprachigen, analysiert er sorgfältig die biblischen Texte, begnügt sich aber nicht damit, sondern ergänzt deren Zeugnis durch das außerbiblischer Texte, archäologischer, epigraphischer und ikonographischer Daten. Zum ersten Mal versucht so eine kompetente Hand das vielfältige Material zu einem Gesamtbild zusammenzufügen. Dieses weicht in manchen Punkten markant von dem ab, das in Theologien und Religionsgeschichten Israels entworfen worden ist, die ausschließlich auf den biblischen Texten basierten. Keel bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die entscheidenden Elemente und Prozesse, die das Gesicht des biblischen Monotheismus geprägt haben.
