Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: A, language: English, abstract: The present study tries to answer the broad question how the concept of homestay has been perceived by both tourists who visit homestay and homestay operators in Sri Lanka. The general explicit objective of this research study is to explore the homestay tourism product attributes, tourists' motivation and satisfaction and the perceptions of host communities on the homestay tourism product. Obviously the research is socio-economically and culturally situated and requires a rich narrative description which would support both qualitative and quantitative methods. The study utilized exploratory research design to examine the predicting effects of tourist's motivation and product attributes on tourists' satisfaction, the relationship between tourist's motivation and tourists' overall satisfaction and hosts' perceptions of homestay. Homestays in Sri Lanka have become increasingly popular as an accommodation option among domestic and international tourists. The client patronage to homestay is increasing drastically given the increasing tourist arrivals to the country. In addition, operators need to regard which attributes influence tourist satisfaction and their destination choice in order to formulate the strategies that attract and better satisfy customers. Although several researchers have studied the cultural and heritage tourism, they did not provide homestay issues, especially homestays in Sri Lanka.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven, language: English, abstract: This paper aims to explore different types of tourist taxes and the motives for implementing them, as well as the impacts they induce on different stakeholders. Further, the topic of sustainability in tourism is elucidated. The research then deals with the willingness of German tourists to pay those taxes under different circumstances. As the literature review revealed a few qualitative studies on this topic, a quantitative approach was chosen, in order to test the results of these studies and the resulting hypotheses. It was expected, that tourists are likely to change their travel behavior due to the implementation of taxes, it was rather expected that they would not be willing to pay them. However, the study showed, that most participants are willing to pay a tourist tax, if the allocated funds are used to ensure the environmental sustainability of a destination. The factor which mostly influences the willingness to pay, is the respondents’ attitude towards sustainability. Secondly, it was discovered that confidence in the implemented action seems to be of big importance. Participants who trust that allocated funds are used for the mentioned purposes, show a higher willingness to pay. Concludingly, local governments of tourist destination should increase their trustworthiness, by being more transparent, not only in collecting taxes, but also in finding appropriate purposes for spending the money on. Tourists are more likely to pay, if it is for the ‘right’ cause. As the overtourism problem increases around the world, many popular tourist destinations are resorting to measures, which are supposed to solve the problem totally, or to at least find ways to compensate the adverse effects created by tourism. One of these measures is the implementation of tourist taxes, which has become increasingly popular amongst several tourism destinations. Depending on how the funds created by these taxes are used, they could for example ensure the sustainability of a destination.

Gansbaai, a small coastal town in South Africa, is considered "the shark cage diving capital of the world", despite there being over 40 shark tourism destinations worldwide. However, Gansbaai has one outstanding feature which few other destinations have: great white sharks. Because of this, Gansbaai attracts visitors from all over the world who travel to the area with the expectation to witness this particular species, making it an international hotspot for shark tourists. However, in recent years, a decline in the great white shark population has been widely reported in the media. The decline of the shark population is not only a problem for South Africa, but globally. Today, 172 shark species are already on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Yet, South Africa is one of the few places on earth where humans have the opportunity to interact with this species at close range. The outcry is great, as the impact on the South African shark industry has been profound. It seems that this has also had an impact on the satisfaction of the participants, as an ad-hoc analysis of online ratings shows. This is critical for the industry, as potential participants nowadays take their cue from the experiences of previous people. The main reason for this is the confusing plethora of tourism services available today. Therefore, the online review platform TripAdvisor has become a reliable source for travel decisions. Accordingly, analyses of online reviews have become particularly popular in the tourism and hospitality industry as it allows service providers to gain insight into what influences consumer satisfaction. This shows the importance for tour operators in Gansbaai's shark industry to understand what influences visitor satisfaction in order to adjust their concepts sustainably. Therefore, the aim of the study is to identify the factors which influence visitor satisfaction in the shark tourism industry in Gansbaai based on TripAdvisor reviews.
