Seit langem und bis heute liegt Hinterpommern, polnisch Pomorze Zachodnie, als historische Kulturlandschaft an der äußersten Peripherie jedes kulturwissenschaftlichen Interesses, sowohl in Deutschland als auch in Polen. Dabei verspricht die Beschäftigung mit der geschichtlichen Alltagskultur Pommerns lohnenswerte Erkenntnisse über Konstanz, Tradition, Kulturkontakt und -wandel. Über etwa zehn Jahre hinweg, von 1930 bis 1940, hat Walter Borchers im Pommerschen Landesmuseum in Stettin eine wissenschaftliche Museumsvolkskunde aufgebaut. Seine Tätigkeit wurde dort nach 1945 von polnischen Ethnographen fortgesetzt. Die Darstellung widmet sich diesem in der Öffentlichkeit unbekannten Kontinuum. Vom Begriff der Volkskunst ausgehend zeichnet sie den dokumentarischen Umgang mit der historischen Sachkultur in Pommern nach.
