In Rethinking Schubert, today's leading Schubertians offer fresh perspectives on the composer's importance and our perennial fascination with him. Subjecting recurring issues in historical, biographical and analytical research to renewed scrutiny, the twenty-two chapters yield new insights into Schubert, his music, his influence and his legacy, and broaden the interpretative context for the music of his final years. With close attention to matters of style, harmonic and formal analysis, and text setting, the essays gathered here explore a significant portion of the composer's extensive output across a range of genres. The most readily explicable aspect of Schubert's appeal is undoubtedly our continuing engagement with the songs. Schubert will always be the first port of call for scholars interested in the relationship between music and the poetic text, and several essays in Rethinking Schubert offer welcome new inquiries into this subject. Schien es doch legitim, daB die Stadt, die seit sechs Jahrhunderten mit der Universitat lebt, tiber ihre traditions reichste Einrichtung nachdenken wollte. Als Titel der Vortragsreihe bot sich jener Titel an, den Karl Jaspers 1946 seiner Schrift tiber die Heidelberger Uni versitat gegeben hatte: Die Idee der Universitat. 1m Wintersemester 1985/86 und Sommersemester 1986 hielten sechs hervorragende Vertreter interdisziplinarer For schung und Lehre Vortrage, die in diesem Band zusammen gefaBt sind. 1m Wintersemester versuchten die Beitrage des Heidel berger Philosophen und Jaspers-Nachfolgers Prof. Gada mer, des Hamburger Wissenschaftssenators Prof. Meyer Abich und des Vizeprasidenten des Wissenschaftskollegs, Prof. Lepenies, den Standort der Universitat in der Ge schichte, der politis chen Gegenwart der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und im internationalen Vergleich zu bestim men. VI Vorwort 1m Sommersemester konzentrierten sich die Beitrage des Nobelpreistragers Prof. Eigen, Max-Planck-Institut Got tingen, Prof. Lubbe, Zurich und Prof. Habermas, Frank furt, auf die innere Entwicklung der Universitat und die Reformbestrebungen der letzten Jahrzehnte. In seiner Schrift "Die Idee der Universitat" bestimmt Karl Jaspers: "Die Aufgabe der Universitat ist die Wissen schaft. Eine Schrift gleichen Titels hat Jaspers 1923 und 1946 in heute zum Teil überholten Fassungen veröffentlicht. Wir haben sie nach vielen zwischen uns geführten Gesprächen neu zu gestalten versucht. Geschrieben wurden die Einleitung und Teil I von J aspers, Teil II von Rossmann. Die Idee ist dieselbe geblieben, die ganz veränderte Daseins situation aber verlangt, daß ihre Erscheinung sich wandelt. Heute wird die Reform der Universität als eine für den Staat lebensentscheidende Aufgabe erkannt. Große organisatori sche Vorarbeiten sind geleistet worden. Trotzdem sind viele der um die Reform Bemühten: Forscher und Gelehrte wie die Be auftragten der Regierungen, von der Sorge bedrückt, ob es in Zukunft noch Universitäten oder unter ihrem Namen etwas ganz anderes geben wird. Das Bekenntnis zur Traditionsform genügt nicht mehr. Die Alternative ist heute: Entweder gelingt die Erhaltung der deut schen Universität durch Wiedergeburt der Idee im Entschluß zur Verwirklichung einer neuen Organisationsgestalt oder sie findet ihr Ende im Funktionalismus riesiger Schul- und Ausbil dungsanstalten für wissenschaftlich-technische Fachkräfte. Deshalb gilt es, aus dem Anspruch der Idee die Möglichkeiten einer Erneuerung der Universität in einer den Prinzipien des geistigen Lebens und der modernen Wissenschaftlichkeit selber entsprechenden inneren und äußeren Struktur zu entwerfen und zu beurteilen. An der Lösung dieser Aufgabe möchten wir mit helfen.

The biggest challenge of the twenty-first century is to bring the effects of public life into relation with the intractable problem of global atmospheric change. Climate and the Picturesque in the American Tropics explains how we came to think of the climate as something abstract and remote rather than a force that actively shapes our existence. The book argues that this separation between climate and sensibility predates the rise of modern climatology and has deep roots in the era of colonial expansion, when the American tropics were transformed into the economic supplier for Euro-American empires. The book shows how the writings of American travellers in the Caribbean registered and pushed forward this new understanding of the climate in a pivotal period in modern history, roughly between 1770 and 1860, which was fraught with debates over slavery, environmental destruction, and colonialism. Offering novel readings of authors including J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur, Leonora Sansay, William Cullen Bryant, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Sophia Peabody, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and James McCune Smith in light of their engagements with the American tropics, this book shows that these authors drew on a climatic epistemology that fused science and sentiment in ways that citizen science is aspiring to do today. By suggesting a new genealogy of modern climate thinking, Climate and the Picturesque in the American Tropics thus highlights the urgency of revisiting received ideas of tropicality deeply ingrained in American culture that continue to inform current debates on climate debt and justice.
