Was als Kriminalroman daherkommt, ist eine frühe Milieu-Studie von Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. 1760 wird der junge Friedrich Mergel auf einer Hochzeitsfeier von dem Juden Aaron bloßgestellt, der lauthals die Bezahlung eines ausstehenden Betrages anmahnt. Wenig später wird seine Leiche unter einer Buche gefunden. Friedrich flieht. Eine Delegation der Juden aus der Gegend kauft die Buche und ritzt in die Rinde den Satz „Wenn du dich diesem Orte nahest, so wird es dir ergehen, wie du mir getan hast.“ Seitdem ist der Baum in Dorf als "Judenbuche" bekannt.
