Traces the history of the Jews in Mannheim since the 17th century and describes Jewish customs and institutions. Relates how these institutions functioned during the Nazi period and how they were destroyed. Traces the history of antisemitism in the town: Jews were encouraged by the provincial rulers to settle in Mannheim, but the population and the Catholic Church were hostile, and the municipality imposed numerous restrictions. Until 1933 there was endemic but unspectacular antisemitism. After 1945 there were occasional antisemitic incidents, as well as scandals caused by the courts' indulgence of neo-Nazis and Holocaust deniers. Chronicles Nazi persecutions: the boycott, exclusion of Jews from municipal facilities, Aryanization, the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, and the deportations. This volume is intended to be used in conjunction with the author's "Bilder vom jüdischen Leben in Mannheim" (Mannheim: Stadtarchiv, 1988).

Johanna Geissmar wurde am 7. Dezember 1877 als jüngstes Kind einer angesehenen deutsch-jüdischen Familie in Mannheim geboren. Zu ihren Vorfahren zählten Rabbiner, Kantoren und Religionslehrer. Ihr Vater Josef war ein bekannter Rechtsanwalt. Für die schöne und kluge Johanna kam ein Studium zunächst nicht in Frage, da ihr als Frau des Jahrgangs 1877 die Universitäten noch verschlossen blieben. Nach dem Tod des Vaters kam für die unverheiratete Johanna die Zeit des Aufbruchs: Im Jahre 1900 wurden erstmals Frauen an der Heidelberger Universität zugelassen. Johanna holte das Abitur nach und wählte Medizin als Studienfach. Nach ihrer Dissertation 1916 blieb sie als Ärztin im Lazarettdienst, wo sie das Elend des Krieges hautnah miterlebte. Ab dem Jahre 1920 praktizierte sie als Kinderärztin in Heidelberg und wurde bald von arm und reich geschätzt. Anfang 1933 musste ihre Praxis geschlossen werden, da im nationalsozialistischen Deutschen Reich jüdische Ärztinnen /Ärzte keine Kassenverträge mehr bekamen. Am 28. August 1933 meldete Johanna Geissmar sich beim Einwohneramt der Stadt Heidelberg ab, blieb aber in Deutschland. Zunächst zog sie in den Schwarzwald nach Bärental, ab 1935 lebte sie in Saig. In diesem kleinen Ort wurde bald bekannt, dass sie Jüdin war. Nach dem Novemberpogrom 1938 wurde Johanna Geissmar tätlich angegriffen. Sie fand Zuflucht bei ihrer Freundin Erika Schwoerer, deren Familie kein Hehl aus ihrer Verachtung für den Nationalsozialismus machte. Als die Lage immer bedrohlicher wurde, wandte sich Erika an den evangelischen Pfarrer Martin Huß, der ein Mitglied der "Bekennenden Kirche" war. Doch diese Hilfe war vergebens. Die Ärztin wurde von der Gestapo am 23. Oktober 1940 zu einer der drei Sammelstellen gebracht und in das Lager von Gurs deportiert. Im August 1942 wurde sie nach Auschwitz-Birkenau transportiert. Obwohl ihr Name nicht auf der Liste stand, meldete sie sich freiwillig, vor allem weil sie hoffte, ihre Geschwister dort zu finden. Als Todestag kann ihr Ankunftstag in Auschwitz-Birkenau gesehen werden: der 14. August 1942. In einem Vorwort schreibt Margot Wicki-Schwarzschild, die als neunjähriges Mädchen nach Gurs deportiert wurde, zu Recht: "Das vorliegende Buch ist eine Hommage an eine große Frau und zugleich eine weiteres Werk gegen das Vergessen."
