Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2000 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Amerika, Note: 2.0, Universität zu Köln (Iberische und Lateinamerikanische Abteilung des Historischen Seminars), Veranstaltung: Panama und der Panamakanal, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Panama war schon seit Beginn der Kolonialzeit geprägt von seiner Bedeutung für den interozeanischen Transit und war aufgrund dessen von ausländischen Mächten sehr begehrt. Für diese reduzierte sich jedoch das Land selbst auf die Funktion und war diese nicht vonnöten, verfiel auch das Interesse an der Region. Doch spätestens mit der Vision des interozeanischen Kanals wurde Panama als Standort reizvoll für fremde Projekte. Für viele der lateinamerikanischen Länder war der Weg in die Unabhängigkeit von Konflikten, Revolten und Umstürzen geprägt. Die Loslösung Panamas von Kolumbien verlief gewaltlos unter dem Schutz der Vereinigten Staaten, doch bezahlte Panama seine Unabhängigkeit und Sicherheit mit seiner Freiheit, die es mit der Abtretung der Kanalrechte und der Akzeptanz der US-Präsenz im eigenen Lande aufgab. Zwar war die Souveränität de jure gegeben, doch der Einfluss der US-amerikanischen Nation auf die junge Republik machte sich in jedem Bereich des öffentlichen Lebens bemerkbar. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Darstellung der Formierung der jungen Republik Panama nach ihrer Unabhängigkeit 1903 und der Einflussnahme der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika auf die Prozesse sowie die Entwicklung des neuen Staates. So soll es nicht Schwerpunkt sein, die Entstehung und den Fortgang oder den Kanalbau selbst in seiner Breite historisch aufzuarbeiten; vielmehr zielen die Ausarbeitungen darauf ab, differenziert den Einfluss der USA in bestimmten Bereichen und Sektoren der Republik Panama vor seinem rechtlichen Hintergrund zu erörtern. Printed in Leiden and Amsterdam in the 1620s and 1630s, the Republics evolved into foundational works of early modern political studies. By first tracing the volumes’ circulation and presence in book collections and libraries in the seventeenth century, this study provides fresh insights into their diverse readerships as well as their prominent role in the early modern book market. It then delves into their various academic purposes and their textual, intellectual, and political traditions through selected case studies on the Dutch Republic, the Spanish Empire, and Safavid Persia.

At the turn of the 20th Century, Turks founded a modern nation state. Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatork played the most significant role in the foundation of Turkish Republic. Migrations have played an important role in the formation of the social structure of this state; and population exchange between Greece and Turkey occupies the first place among these migrations. The exchange included all the residents of t within the boundaries of both Greece and Turkey with the exception of those in West Thrace and Istanbul. Thus, 1.200.000 people migrated from Turkey to Greece; and, similarly, 500.000 people migrated from Greece to Turkey. This book comprises of some of the articles that I have written at different times on the topics of Atatork and the Population Exchange.

Austria 1867-1955 connects the political history of German-speaking provinces of the Habsburg Empire before 1914 (Vienna and the Alpine Lands) with the history of the Austrian Republic that emerged in 1918. John W. Boyer presents the case of modern Austria as a fascinating example of democratic nation-building. The construction of an Austrian political nation began in 1867 under Habsburg Imperial auspices, with the German-speaking bourgeois Liberals defining the concept of a political people (Volk) and giving that Volk a constitution and a liberal legal and parliamentary order to protect their rights against the Crown. The decades that followed saw the administrative and judicial institutions of the Liberal state solidified, but in the 1880s and 1890s the membership of the Volk exploded to include new social and economic strata from the lower bourgeoisie and the working classes. Ethnic identity was not the final structuring principle of everyday politics, as it was in the Czech lands. Rather social class, occupational culture, and religion became more prominent variables in the sortition of civic interests, exemplified by the emergence of two great ideological parties, Christian Socialism and Social Democracy in Vienna in the 1890s. The war crisis of 1914/1918 exploded the Empire, with the Crown self-destructing in the face of military defeat, chronic domestic unrest, and bitter national partisanship. But this crisis also accelerated the emergence of new structures of democratic self-governance in the German-speaking Austrian lands, enshrined in the republican Constitution of 1920. Initial attempts to make this new project of democratic nation-building work failed in the 1920s and 1930s, culminating in the catastrophe of the 1938 Nazi occupation. After 1945 the surviving legatees of the Revolution of 1918 reassembled under the four-power Allied occupation, which fashioned a shared political culture which proved sufficiently flexible to accommodate intense partisanship, resulting, by the 1970s, in a successful republican system, organized under the aegis of elite democratic and corporatist negotiating structures, in which the Catholics and Socialists learned to embrace the skills of collective but shared self-governance.
