Joseph Schmidlin (1876-1944) wirkte als katholischer Theologe und gilt als Begründer der katholischen Missionswissenschaft. Er begründete die Missionswissenschaft als eigenständige Disziplin im katholisch-theologischen Fächerkanon. Sein Vorläufer im evangelischen Raum war der Inhaber des ersten Missionswissenschaftlichen Lehrstuhls in Deutschland, Gustav Warneck, den Schmidlin bewunderte sich aber gleichzeitig von ihm absetzte. Für Schmidlin besteht die Missionswissenschaft aus der Missionskunde, die sich mit den bestehenden Umständen und der Geschichte der Mission befaßt, und der Missionstheorie, die nach dem Grund und der Methodik der Mission fragt. Der vorliegende Band wurde im Auftrag des Internationalen Instituts für missionswissenschaftliche Forschung aus Anlaß des 25 jährigen Regierungsjubiläums des Kaisers herausgegeben und ist eine Gesamtdarstellung der katholischen Kolonialmission innerhalb der Grenzen des deutschen Schutzgebietes. Das Werk ist ein bilderreicher, interessanter Einblick in die innere Geschichte der katholischen Mission, in die missionsmethodische Problematik und den wirtschaftlichen Gegebenheiten aller deutschen Kolonien jener Zeit. Sorgfältig bearbeiteter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1913.
